<p>James Melville Gilliss's U.S. Naval Astronomical Expedition to the Southern Hemisphere during the Years 1849 1850 1851 and 1852 was published in Washington by A.O.P. Nicholson in 1855. Issued as the first edition this official government report presents one of the most ambitious American scientific efforts of the nineteenth century. Gilliss an officer in the U.S. Navy and founder of the Naval Observatory organized the expedition while Archibald MacRae recorded extensive field observations. This second volume covers MacRae's journeys through the Andes and the Argentine pampas describing minerals Indian remains mammals birds shells fossils dried plants reptiles and fish.
