New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers 1852. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. The "Town Ho's Story" appeared on pages 659-665 in the October 1851 issue of Harper's New Monthly Magazine. It was the first appearance of any part of the great novel Moby Dick and became chapter 54 in the book. A publisher's note on page 659 says: "From The Whale the title of a new work by Mr. Melville now in the press of Harper and Brothers and now publishing in London by Mr. Bentley." The chapter concerns a potential mutiny and the appearance of Moby Dick that thwarted the uprising. It was a first report of the white whale while at sea. <br /> <br /> The volume is bound in contemporary quarter black leather over black cloth boards with gilt titling and raised bands to spine. Minor wear to edges of boards hinges and corners. Interior pages are clean and bright overall with occasional spots of foxing and browning. Very good condition. 864 pages. PER/031424. Bound in quarter-leather over marbled black boards. Leather is worn along edges and joints. Light rubbing to head and tail of spine otherwise leather is relatively clean on spine. Gilding on spine still bright. Foxing and toning throughout text but binding is still tight.</p><p>This edition of Harper's New Monthly Magazine is significant for being the first appearance of three anonymous short stories written by Herman Melville after the publication and failure of "Moby Dick" in 1851. These stories include "Poor Man's Pudding and Rich Man's Crumbs" pages 95-101 "The Happy Failure" pages 196-199 and "The Fiddler" pages 536-539. These stories were written during a difficult time in Melville's life characterized by financial and medical struggles. Unable to find a book publisher for his novels "Isle of the Cross" and "Israel Potter" Melville was mostly published in Harper's and Putnam's magazines for the period of 1853 to 1856. This volume is an interesting addition to any budding Melville collection.</p><p>Includes numerous illustrations throughout text. Also of interest in this volume are chapters from "The Newcomes" by William Thackeray a discussion of the Napoleonic Battles of the Nile and Trafalgar by Alphonse de Lamartine with numerous illustrations related to Napoleonic figures and events and a chapter with illustrations discussing then antiquated fashion styles.</p> Harper & Brothers Publishers hardcover
