Gemeint ist hier wohl die zum äußerlichen Ritual erstarrte Tradition, der bröckelige Putz religiöser Lehrgebäude. Melvilles Vergleich der griechischen Kykladen mit den "jungfräulichen" Inseln des polynesischen Archipels gerät unwillkürlich zu einer Diagnose seines eigenen Zustandes: "Die ersteren wirken erschöpft und sind ausgemergelt, wie das Leben, dem die Begeisterung abhanden gekommen ist." In Italien ändert sich der Ton des Reisebuchs ein wenig.
