These architectural engravings are in the style of David Loggan's famed 'Oxonia Illustrata'. The plates are untrimmed with exceptional margins. Loosely inserted are the first edition preliminaries and title page for 'Oxonia Illustrata Sive Omnium Celeberrimae Istius Universitatis Collegiorum' by David Loggan. The title page contents pages and introduction are all trimmed down to a folio size. All of the plates are by William Williams or 'Guilelmus Williams' who was an architectural draughtsman. With the bookplate of John Rolle Baron Rolle of Stevenstone 1750-1842. John Rolle was a British peer who served as a MP in support of William Pitt the Younger. He wrote attacks on Edmund Burke and Charles James Fox in the early 1780s which lead to his being subject to an attack in the satire 'The Rolliad'. Plates are unnumbered. There are nineteen double page engravings to this work total. These engravings are styled after Loggan's 'Oxonia Illustrata' which was produced as a companion volume to Wood's 'History and Antiquities of the University of Oxford' which was published in 1674. The contents pages for this work gives a page number that corresponds to Wood's entry on that building to his own work. The DNB notes that 'distinguished visitors' to the university were frequently offered Loggan's 'Oxonia' with Wood's 'History.' together as gifts. A lovely collection of these famous architectural engravings of one of the world's most famous universities. In a contemporary mottled calf binding. Externally rubbed to the spine and to the extremities. Hinges are tender and may detach with further handling. Bookplate to the front pastedown 'John Rolle'. Preliminary pages are loosely inserted. Otherwise internally firmly bound. Loss to the edge of 'Aula Novi Hospiti' only affecting the margins. Pages are very bright.
