A few old bibliographical notes about the work tipped onto the rear free endpaper. Very good. A detailed work prepared for the Tehuantepec Railroad Company of New Orleans concerning railroad and maritime communication between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans via the Isthmus of Tehauntepec. The beautiful lithographic plates by Sarony depict people scenes and buildings in Minatitlan Ishuatlan and other points in the region. Internally very neat and clean. Very good. "A non-conformist missionary Williams was sent by the London Missionary Society to the Society Islands in 1816. He traveled about the islands converting the native populace to Christianity.He made his headquarters at Raiatea but also visited the Cook Islands and discovered Rarotonga where he sojourned for a considerable time. While there he aided in the establishment of a civil administration based upon the new religion of the islanders. After his return to Raiatea he set forth on the other voyages to Samoa Tonga and the neighboring islands.Later he sailed to the New Hebrides; while visiting the island of Erromanga he was murdered by cannibals on November 20 1839" - Hill. It is the 1870s and Will Andrews fired up by Emerson to seek "an original relation to nature" drops out of Harvard and heads west. He washes up in Butcher's Crossing a small Kansas town on the outskirts of nowhere. Butcher's Crossing is full of restless men looking for ways to make money and ways to waste it.
