States Fairs for the Best Business and Ornamental Penmanship." Williams was one of the foremost practitioners and educators of Spencerian calligraphy. ‎New York: The New York Printing & Publishing Company 1879. 30x24 cm quarto pp. 1-7 8-121 122-124: blank many woodcut engravings some full page original bevel-edged brown cloth front panel stamped in black and gold rear panel stamped in blind no stamping on spine panel all edges gilt light yellow endpapers. Apparently a later printing. There is another version of this book with imprint "New York: The Arundel Print." It is copyright 1874 and the printer's imprint on copyright page reads: "Russell Brothers Printers 17-23 Rose Street N. Y." A popular work perhaps sold by subscription with eighty woodcuts 27 full-page and 53 smaller ones illustrating prose descriptions of American scenery including the White Mountains the Hudson River the Adirondacks Niagara Falls Mammoth Cave Yellowstone Yosemite and elsewhere. Neither the artists nor the engravers are credited in this version dated 1879 or in the version copyright 1874. The description of Yosemite Valley pages 65-71 includes five illustrations two full page. One of the smaller illustrations a picture of an oak tree incorrectly captioned "Big Tree" is part of the full page illustration printed on page 69. Cowan 1933 p. 687 dating 1880. Bent p.58. ‎Dallas 1929. 152pp. Original color lithographic wrappers decorative white cord. Several newspaper clippings laid in. Rear wrapper detached but present and chipped front wrapper chipped around edges. Some chipping to edges of pages occasional light stains throughout but interior mostly clean. Good. Rare charitable cookbook produced to benefit the Red Cross in Dallas Texas in the early 20th century. The cover boldly states "Proceeds of this book will go to Red Cross" with a five-pointed star containing a red white and blue eagle and shield in the center. The cover was designed by and signed in print by Edalah Connor-Glover a musician and prominent member of Dallas society. The first twenty-six pages and the final eight pages are comprised of advertisements for Dallas businesses featuring everything from gas and electric companies to car dealerships insurance agents dry cleaners and dairies. The titlepage finally appears on p.27. The cookbook is divided into sections: "Soups Fish and Oysters Poultry and Game Meats Vegetables" and so forth. There is also a section entitled "Discoveries" with helpful information on how "To Clean Oil Paintings" how "To Fold a Man's Coat" and a section on "Stains." At the end there are seven blank pages for the owner to add their own recipes. Mrs. John F. Williams is not otherwise identified however there is an advertisement from her on p.152 locating her in Highland Park today a very affluent part of Dallas and identifying her as a "Teacher of Literature and Modern Drama Browning Study Courses Special Courses in Ancient Modern and Medieval Literature." He seems to have hopped from ship to ship and made whaling trips which included stops at Sydney Lord Howe Island and Hobart as well as Fiji and Tonga. Some actual whaling incidents are recounted but Williams career was far more wide-ranging including gold mining in California and Australia. VG. Forster 105. Howes W-465. Jenkins p. 160. Williams was sent . . . to the Society Islands in 1816. He traveled about the island converting the native populations. . . . He made his headquarters at Raiatea but also visited the Cook Islands and discovered Rarotonga where he sojourned for a considerable time. He voyaged to Samoa Tonga and the neighboring islands. He returned to England in 1834 for a four-year period where he commissioned a printing of the New Testament and then translated it into Rarotongan . . . where he sojourned for a considerable time. After a successful speaking tour of England during which time he oversaw the printing of his translation of the New Testament into Rarotongan he returned to the Pacific in 1838 and while visiting the island of Erromanga he was murdered by cannibals. <br>    <br>    Hill 2004 ed. 1875.
