Accompanied by an Entirely New and Authentic Map of the United States Including California Oregon Etc. and a Map of the Island of Cuba‎

‎Philadelphia: Lippincott Grambo & Co 1851. 1st edition Clark III 434; Graff 4687; New Howes W-487. Original publisher's wallet-style purple leather binding with gilt title stamping to one side. Leather faded to dark tan. Old paper repair to top of rear hinge. Map with some age-toning along the two center horizontal fold-lines. Overall a respectable VG copy. iv 5 - 216 20 pp. Publisher catalogue last 20 pages. Fold-out map 24-3/4" x 29-1/2" at rear entitled "A New Map of the United States © 1851 upon which are Delineated its Vast Works of Internal Communication Routes across the Continent &c. Showing also Canada and the Island of Cuba." Map hand-colored in outline. Scale: ~ 65 mi = 1". 4 insets including one depicting California & Oregon. 12mo. 5-9/16" x 3-1/2"

While Howes categorizes this work as a derivative of Williams' earlier Appleton publications the author in his prefatory "To the Public" goes to great pains to reassure the reader this a new work in which an "entirely new plan has been adopted." a stance to which Clark & Graff agree. Further research suggests this the first Williams' publication to address California. This 1851 map not recorded by Wheat TRANSMISSIPPI though see entry 769 for the 1852 version. Wheat tells us the map "is largely based on Fremont but which carries much up-to-date information .". Somewhat uncommon on the commercial market with last copy to auction in 1999. ‎Minutes of a Communist Cell on Art: Anonymous but Believed Unquestionably Authentic by Competent Authorities Reveals the Party's Tactic re: "Modern Art" Cover Title‎

‎Fullerton California: Education Information Inc. 1960. First Edition.

Small Quarto 10 5/8 x 8 1/4 inches; 271 x 212 mm 21 pages in stapled illustrated wrappers

A "second report on modern art" issued by Education Information Inc. an Orange County California anti-communist outfit. The main highlight: the purported minutes of a Communist cell comprising artists and writers: "PROGRAM: Remove all inspiring and beautiful art from all exhibits and substitute degenerate art in its place.Keep rational art out of all public exhibits -- allow only empty or distorted art to be shown in museums dealers' exhibits.Tie junk together and set it up as sculpture."

There's plenty more in this vein. The woman who took these notes -- "a friend of truth and decency" -- supposedly mailed them to the right-wing sculptor Wheeler Williams who was active in anticommunist politics. Williams provides a Foreword to the notes saying he believes they're authentic. He says he shared the notes with colleagues and some former FBI undercover agents all of whom apparently believe the notes are genuine.

Also in this pamphlet are articles on "subversion in art" lengthy excerpts from Williams's testimony to Congress on the Soviet uses of art and a piece by E. Merrill Root on conservative philosophy.

This pamphlet is scarce. OCLC records around a dozen institutional holdings. SCARCE.

CONDITION: Vertical fold throughout original mailing label and partially removed tape to lower wrapper extremities worn from handling staples a bit rusted. Otherwise Very Good. Education Information, Inc. books‎

Faint off-setting. Sheet size: 18 x 22 7/8 inches. A pair of striking views of Christ Church college from William Williams' seminal text "Oxonia Depicta."

These striking studies illustrate the north and south prospect of the New Quadrangle Christ Church College Oxford. Following the success of David Loggan's "Oxonia Illustrata" published in 1675 the University commissioned William Williams to produce a similar work entitled "Oxonia Depicta". Published between 1732 and 1733 "Oxonia Depicta" is comprised of sixty-four plans and views of Oxford University's various colleges. As in this pair of images many of the engravings include blueprints for proposed buildings and renovations; some of which were carried out and some of which were left unfinished. Williams' important text is not only a fascinating architectural study; it provides a crucial record of the changing landscape of this renowned academic institution. unknown books‎

‎Cincinnati 1828. 272pp. Contemporary calf. Rear free endpaper torn. Contemporary ownership inscriptions to front endpapers. Foxing. Good. Williams visited Maryland Virginia the Carolinas and Georgia in his capacity as a Quaker minister. He blamed much of the evil he saw rampant on the frontier on demon rum and had little better to say about the northern states he visited. Clark aptly describes Williams' narrative as "an exceedingly dull book" but goes on to indicate that "material for the study of Quakers in the South in this period is so scarce that Williams should be consulted." This is probably the greatest work by the influential poet who called for the use of the native voice in American poetics. In a letter to Robert Lowell March 11 1952 Williams wrote: "I've become interested in a young poet Allen Ginsberg of Patterson -- who is coming to personify the place for me.
