R A R E This is a most fascinating primary resource. Obscure & rare! The narrative begins: "The object of this voyage was to carry back to their country seven shipwrecked Japanese who had been residing at Macao for several months and whose return it was reasonably supposed would form a good excuse for appearing in the harbors of that empire." With this mis- sion in mind the story unfolds. This is an exceptionally obscure and rare copy of the journal kept by S.W. Williams a celebrated American sinologist and missionary who came to Canton to run the Mission Press. During his twenty-three sojourn in China as a missionary he supervised the publica- tions from the Mission Press as well as the monthly period- ical the "Chinese Repository" and worked on a dictionary of grammar of the Cantonese dialect. He was also the celebr- ated author of the classic on China: MIDDLE KINGDOM. So the story continues. It was in the summer of 1837 that Williams received an invitation to join in the attempt to organize the return of some seven shipwrecked Japanese sailors from Macao to the Bay of Edo in the ship "Morrison." The mission failed because the Japanese refused to allow the return to Japan of any of its citizens who were lost at sea or who il- legally went abroad during the period of Sakoku or "Closed Country." This experience in Japan stimulated Williams to study the Japanese language and people with the assistance of two of the shipwrecked Japanese sailors whom he employ- ed at his press. Against this backdrop & experience in 1853 he received a request from Commodore Perry to accompany the expedition to open Japan as the official interpreter. A tale of five mariners bold or the log book of the Hattie B. by "Bertie Lambkins
Philadelphia: July 15-30 1894. Pocket diary 3½" x 6" 73 pages written in ink in a neat hand; 2 small pen & ink drawings at the beginning and the end of the journal; leather cover with some wear at extremities but the binding is sound. Together with 7 cabinet-size photographs each identified on the verso: George B. Taylor Walter E. Terry John E. Latta 2 Harrison W. Latta and Theodore A. Mehl 2. Recounting the adventures of five young men from Philadelphia who formed a club called the "Turk's Club" and who set off on an adventure along the New England coast aboard the sloop Hattie B. out of New York. The names of the five as listed on page one are: Archibald Ferguson Reddie Frederick Howard Mehl Theodore Ashmead Mehl John Ewing Latta and Heberton Lee Williams. They were all born between 1868 and 1870 making them in their late twenties at the time of the cruise. They were from upper middle-class families and included coal and lumber dealers the Mehl brothers a merchant tailor and Reddie at the time an "artist" but later the head of the Public Speaking Department of the University of Oregon. Heberton Lee Williams was to achieve future fame as the designer of the Campbell's soup can label. Campbell introduced its highly recognized red-and-white label in 1898. According to corporate lore the company's treasurer at the time Heberton L. Williams was inspired to drop the then black-and-orange labels in favor of the colors of Cornell University's football uniform after attending a Thanksgiving Day game between Cornell and the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia see: "Campbell Collecting Pieces From Its Past For A New Museum" by Charles V. Zehren Inquirer Staff Writer. May 26 1987. The journal not actually a log is humorously written and opens with "On the eventful fourteenth of July 1894 there was seen at the Broad Street Station Philadelphia four youths of sportive mien surrounded by interested friends and a stack of luggage their faces pictures of happy contentment due to the throwing aside of all cares and the possession of opulent pocketbooks . Leaving Philadela sic on the Limited express played whist enroute arriving in New York chased across the town to East River and boarded the steamer Manhattan of the Mains Steamship Co for Cottage City. "After a hearty dinner we wound our way to the wharf and were delighted to find that the celebrated sloop Hattie B had just arrived. Met the captain a typical yankee skipper with a curious dialect peculiar to the natives . The first procedure on board the sloop soon as she was under way was to make ourselves look as tough as possible in this the success was astounding . Went ashore and laid in a stock of provisions then took an oar apiece and pulled for the sloop found her anchored in Little Harbor Woods Hole with everything in readiness for the night and Capt Carney at his post almost starved no doubt after shipping the stores we proceeded to get supper under discouraging circumstances everything was new the boat the store and the cook. Theodore assumed charge of the culinary department the fire goes out and the water refuses to boil but after two hours of effort supper was announced . The dory drifted quite far out in the bay without our knowledge until we noticed a fog coming up--with an effort reached the sloop just in time to escape it. The spectacle of the gang turning in for the night was amusing such an innovation all slept in our tough clothes and sweaters. Fred in the cabin Theo and Arch on the deck under the awning with cushion for a mattress and a down quilt for covering." The group visited Boston New Bedford points around Cape Cod including Hyannis Port Vineyard Haven then down to Rhode Island; Block Island and Newport. "The entrance to Newport was superb a harbor could scarcely be more picturesque. Arrived in port at 3:15 PM and anchored to a wharf the cook struck tonight so we donned our full dress uniforms and went ashore early to satisfy our curiosity and greedy appetites . Later we ventured to inquire the price of that meal-$6.00 a piece Holy Smoke! but one must put on style at Newport . The Turks flag on our sail seems to attract considerable attention it looks either like a private flag or some ensign. Tis amusing to watch the officers on board some of the palatial yachts in the harbor trying to make out the flag apparently. Owing to the suspicious character of our flag we always arm ourselves to the teeth at night when tied to a wharf for fear of river pirates and other vagabonds. Theo sleeps with his bowie knife under him but judging from the difficulty in rousing him to build the fire in the mornings it is doubtful an intruder could clear the deck without disturbing Theo. Bertie has a trusty revolver at hand but should purchase a barn float down the stream and it became necessary . the chances are the bullet would go right over the barn with the very best intentions." The voyage ended up with stops in New Jersey and then back into New York via steamship. July 15-30 unknown

Archive of correspondence to Frederick Wells Williams
New Haven India England and Japan 1915. A collection of 42 items mostly manuscript letters signed from a variety of academics administrators and Yale men to the sinologist Frederick Wells Williams 1857-1928 with a few letters from Williams' father-in-law the theologian Hemen Lincoln Wayland to his daughter Williams' wife Fanny. Frederick Wells Williams was the son of Samuel Wells Williams also a sinologist and missionary to China. The elder Williams was the first professor of Chinese language and literature in the United States. The younger Williams continued this trade and was himself a professor of Oriental history at Yale. The majority of the archive is comprised of manuscript letters addressed to Williams dealing primarily with matters of travel. Williams planned visits to Panama Morocco and particularly India and sought letters of introduction or meetings with men with connections there. The letters chiefly concern meeting up or making plans with some exceptions as noted below. Included are ALS's from: 1. Ion Perdicaris Greek-American heir most famous for being kidnapped in Morocco for a high ransom and compelling Roosevelt to declare "Perdicaris alive or Raisuli dead!" Perdicaris assists Williams in making connections in Morocco. 2. Thomas Raynesford Lounsbury who provided 2 colorful letters one from London: "I am staying here. at this hotel. which bears the honored name Thackery but which to my horror . I find is a temperance hotel. I shall consequentially not stay long." The other a cryptic 1p note reading "You can rely upon me to stand by you unflinchingly on the solemn occasion to which you refer and all the more readily that there are no alien interests to interpose. I shall loom up at half-past six." Lounsbury was an English scholar at Yale and an authority on Chaucer. 3. Guy Lestrange a British Orientalist arranging a meeting 4. William Graham Sumner Yale Professor of social science. He asks Williams to find a replacement for his wife to speak at the Soc. Sci. Club. and compliments him on his previous lecture. 5. Charles Lewis Slattery a bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts who provides a "ghost signature" no letter included 6. John Ferguson Weir painter sculptor and teacher at Yale who writes a letter of profuse thanks. "I cannot let the day close without thanking you again for what your friendship prompted and effected - not without great painstaking on your part I know - but which has for me a depth of meaning not to be put in words though it fills my thoughts." 7. George Trumbull Ladd Clark Professor of Metaphysics and Moral Philosophy apologizing for missing a social call. "I was so absorbed in trying out some new rolls that I did not know anyone had entered the house." 8. Poultney Bigelow a Yale classmate of Williams' and traveling journalist. "Just in from the Alps and the Himalayas and the first message from my mound of P. O. Matter is your "US & China" - about which no man can write better than yourself. It was a great pleasure to me last winter in the East to note how tenderly your name is cherished in the minds of scholars & trust you will have many more years of usefulness adding ever to your father's reputation & your own." 9. Maurice Bloomfield American Sanskrit scholar thanking Williams for assistance. 10. Morgan Shuster providing a letter of introduction to General Goethals of the Panama Canal Zone a year after the canal's completion 11. John Bucher thanking Williams for sending something to him. 12. Theodore Morrison an administrator and educator on India regarding letters of introduction for a trip Williams is planning 13. A letter from an unknown author introducing H S Bayley of Hyderabad and "His Highness" the title I can't decipher and advising on how to prepare for Williams' arrival. 14. C. S. Mellen "the last of the railway tsars." Mellen says he will not be able to attend a meeting of the Social Science club because he is having a dinner with the employees and labor orgs of the Boston & Main Railroad. 15. J. G. Jennings inviting Williams to stay with him at his home near Muir College Allahabad. Jenning was at the time president of the college. In addition to this parade of men of note there are a few other letters including: 1. Five letters from M. Arao Oiwa a translator guide and print dealer from Japan discussing the print market in Japan promising products and encouraging Williams to send friends and students to Japan to travel. Oita charges 15 yen a day per person to guide them around the country and speaks warmly of his relationship with Williams. 2. A vitriolic ALS from a Maria Smith who has taken offense at Williams' comment on the behavior of Christian missionaries in China. "You say also that through it all the Chinese have maintained their own 'superior culture and moral principles.' Superior culture! And moral principles! As exemplified no doubt in the condition of their women; the state of marriage; the extremely sanitary condition of the country; the system of education; the political organization and a thousand other notorious systems of debauchery and corruption which have made China what she is and have kept her where she is sunk in ignorance and superstition." 3. Four personal letters between H. L. Wayland and Fannie Williams' wife. Wayland discusses news about the neighborhood and asks after his grandchildren. 4. A manuscript invitation to attend the second meeting of the Excelsior Society of Yale and to provide a lecture. Dated 1908 Signed "Y. Z. China" Also included are a few items of ephemera photo portraits of two Wayland men H.L. Wayland's pamphlet "What Mr. Jenkins thinks" Fannie's grade book marriage license and certificate of proficiency for Remington typewriting menu for the 20th anniversary of the Yale Wolf's Head society of which Williams was a member a menu to the Norfolk Inn on which a pen illustration of women at a table has been drawn a broadside schedule of services for Stewart Street Baptist Church with Wayland providing a sermon and a 6.25" x 10" photograph of an outdoor scene likely Hawaii with figures labeled in manuscript "Norman Garstin J. B. Alexander H. H. Garstin" Norman and H. H. Garstin were English born businessmen who managed a large plantation in Hawaii and moved to California in 1892. Overall an interesting look at the sort of connections a Yale professor maintained at the turn of the 20th century. unknown

New York: Added Enterprises 1949 First edition first printing. Signed and inscribed by Williams in black pen on the table of contents page: "To Bob Love Tennessee Williams Wednesday." Additionally signed by Williams in blue pen next to his poem "Tuesday's Child"printed on p. 367. Publisher's white wrappers printed in brown and green. Very good with some toning to spine and wrapper edges light rubbing to spine a touch of edgewear and a crease to p. 431. Overall a pleasing copy and uniquely signed by Williams. The Partisan Review was an influential literary and political quarterly magazine that ran from 1934 to 2003 publishing notable works by authors like James Baldwin T.S. Eliot George Orwell and Saul Bellow. In Tennessee Williams' poem "Tuesday's Child" he uses the famous nursery rhyme line "Tuesday's child is full of grace" as a jumping off point for exploring sibling dynamics love loneliness and loss. In his inscription on the table of contents page he signs his name "Tennessee Williams Wednesday" a reference to the line "Wednesday's child is full of woe" from the same nursery rhyme and likely a nod to the intense depression and sadness he dealt with his entire life which he bares in his literary works. One of the major playwrights from the 20th century Williams wrote emotionally devastating works like The Glass Menagerie 1945 A Streetcar Named Desire 1947 and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof 1955. Signed. Signed and inscribed by Tennessee Williams on p. 28 beneath the transcription of his Gold Award for Drama 1969 acceptance speech: "a memento of / "the stoned age" / Tennessee Williams". Publisher's blue wrappers with a red horizontal line printed across the spine and front wrapper lettered in black. Near fine with some toning to spine and wrapper edges a touch of wear to head of spine and some staining to spine. Overall an attractive clean copy. This book is a record of the meetings of the Academy of Arts and Letters and the National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1969. Part One transcribes the joint ceremonial of the two honor societies with opening remarks inductions of new members Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn Stephen Spender Louise Bogan Kenneth Rexroth Wallace Stegner etc. and awards Vladimir Nabokov Leopold Stokowsi Tennessee Williams etc. Part Two includes poetry by William Meredith and John Hall Wheelock and Eudora Welty's short story "The Demonstrators." Parts Three and Four feature commemorative tributes like John Hershey on John Steinbeck Louise Bogan on Rolfe Humphries and Virgil Thomson on Douglas Moore. In Lillian Hellman's presentation speech to Tennessee Williams for the American Academy of Arts and Letters Gold Award for Drama 1969 she says "I think it is safe to guess that Williams' influence on the theatre will be there a hundred years from now because the mirror he held in his hand announced a new time almost a new people and the mirror will remain clean and clear" p. 27. For Williams' acceptance speech he gives a funny but fairly off-topic anecdote likely explaining his inscription: "a memento of the stoned age." After Williams' romantic partner Frank Merlo passed away in 1963 Williams struggled with depression and substance abuse leading to a mental breakdown in 1969 and a 3-month stint in a mental hospital. One of the major playwrights from the 20th century Tennessee Williams wrote emotionally devastating works like The Glass Menagerie 1945 A Streetcar Named Desire 1947 and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof 1955. He rejects a metallic currency as simply "not practicable" and analyzes at length the weaknesses of local state-chartered banks: repeated charter violations suspensions failures; state banks' heterogeneous note issues which are not uniform in value or appearance. He explains his plan for a national bank chartered for forty years with checks and balances designed to avoid abuses and cronyism. Its initial capital of $50 million $10 million of which would be subscribed by the government would be enhanced by $10 million of stock sales annually with preference given to shareholders of the existing state-charted banks. <br /> The author makes reference p. 49 to recent Whig victories suggesting that this pamphlet was written late in 1840. Original black and white 8" x 10" photo. Signed by Williams in blue marker. Photo of Williams posing in uniform swinging a bat. Very good photo with some roughness to upper margin of photo verso and small closed tear to left edge of photo that has discrete tape repair to verso. With a JSA Letter of Authenticity. Overall a very pleasing copy. Ted Williams who played his entire 19-year MLB career with the Red Sox is considered to be one of if not the greatest hitter of all time. He was a 2x AL MVP 1946 1949 6x AL batting champion and 4x AL home run leader. Perhaps Williams' greatest claim to fame is that he was the last player to hit over .400 in a season hitting .406 in 1941. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966 and was selected for the Major League Baseball All-Century Team in 1999. Off the field Williams was an avid outdoorsman and world-class fly fisherman; he was inducted into the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame making him one of only a handful of professional athletes to be inducted into more than one Hall of Fame. .
