Williams, Samuel
Autograph Letter Signed as a brash Williams College student Troy New York December 23 1849 to college friend J. Lorenzo Lyons Dover Massachusetts

quarto 3 pages plus stamp less address leaf formerly folded in very good clean and legible condition.

1849 Youthful letter by a future San Francisco literary journalist who befriended Mark Twain.

When in 1921 the Book Club of California commissioned the Grabhorn Press to print "City of the Golden Gate" a description of San Francisco in 1875 it was a tribute to author Samuel Williams' literary renown; when he died in 1881 after 15 years as veteran literary editor and book reviewer of the San Francisco Evening Bulletin William was probably as well-known in the city's literary circles as his friend Mark Twain.

Thirty years earlier when he wrote this letter at age 23 Williams had already sensed that he was destined for journalism. He was then working his way through college as typographic assistant to J.C. Kneeland inventor of the self-inking printing press. Apart from the newspaper work which he began immediately after graduating from Williams College he became a prolific writer some of his magazine articles recounting his experiences in the Middle East where his friend Lorenzo Lyons following in the footsteps of his uncle the first American missionary to Hawaii would himself spend ten years as a missionary in Syria and Lebanon then under Ottoman Turkish rule aiding Christian survivors of Muslim massacres.

In this sarcastic letter written two years before their graduation and foreshadowing his talents as a writer Williams writes Lyons of his outrage that the College's junior honors had been awarded to undeserving shallow young men adept at "humbuggery…the great token of the present age!" The awards Williams joked were as "miraculous" as "pigmies digging tunnels elephants passing through keyholes mosquitoes drinking up the Mississippi" - "impossible and absurd things" having become common "truth becoming ridiculous and lies sublime". The awards ad become nothing more than a "farce.a lie and reproach" made by faculty who were supposed to be "men of common sense" but had displayed "the most uncommon sense" and "ought to be ashamed of themselves." Williams adds a bit of advice to his friend – not to "have too many irons in the fire" to pursue too many young ladies as "Cupid is a little rascal…the most tyrannical of despots. I mean some day to raise a rebellion and dethrone the little winged monarch" and build on the "ruins of his kingdom a Democracy – a golden Republic…a Eutopia. "There might still be "sighs or tears or suicides" but "then I'll be king and reign in his stead."

Money is at a very low rate of interest worth only from 4 to 6 per cent per annm. The Government Loan of about 300000000 dollars has all been taken by our own people and the 6 per cent stock 20 years to run which was taken about three months ago at 8930 now sells at 106 per hundred dollars … Jno D. & M. Williams, George
Autograph Letter Signed Adrian Michigan to Erastus Williams Esperance Schoharie County New York November 19 1836
folio 2 ½ pages of a bi-folium formerly folded some light damp-staining small hole in last leaf due to careless opening affecting a few words of text else in very good legible condition. Williams a recent emigrant to Michigan from New York writes concerning land and the land boom in Michigan: "Mr. Erastus Williams president of the coldwater society Esperance Sir . I must inform you that Mr. Anderson has not succeeded in entering our land as yet. The Kalamazoo office did not open until the 10th inst I got information that it was to open on the 8th Mr. Anderson had been absent to Grand River several weeks and I knew not what the prospect was . The office was to open at 10 o'clock a.m. and at 4 a.m. the people began to collect at the land office and by day light it was judged there were 300 people at the office - they kept collecting at the appointed hour when it was judged there were over 500 people there - at 10 three windows were opened - "and such a getting to the house you never did see" it was kept open one minute and they received a two bushel basket full of applications. Mr. Anderson was fifteen minutes too late in getting to the office - he had been to the woods viewing land and by some means mistook his way which detained him one night longer he arrived at Ionia the day before mounted his poney and rode him 40 miles over the bad roads without feeding the next morning he rode 30 miles by 10 o'clock but his watch being 20 minutes too slow was what deceived him. Mr Anderson has done all that lay in his power to enter the land I think - But no one can conceive the difficulties there are attending it unless they are present. When they had all got there the Receiver gave out word that he should receive no money but specie and Bills on the Michigan Bank and the Farmers & Mechanicks Bank Detroit & Bills of the New York City and Philadelphia Banks of 20 dollars and upwards - as they had all been informed that they would receive Safety Fund Bills very few were prepared for it And most of them had to submit to a shave of from 5 to 8 per cent. I wish you to inform Mr. Deuel that Mr. Anderson has made a discovery of a tract of land which he thinks in point of utility is equal to that which he was to select for us the timber is nearly the same and the location far superior. It is I believe in Range 13 west Township six north - which you will see by looking at Farmer's Map of Michigan is within from one to five miles of Grand River it is below the rapids where the river is navigable for steamboats and other large craft it is about 10 miles in a direct line from the rapids which will probably be the greatest place in Michigan and there is a fine village going ahead within 3 or 4 miles of the tract its name is Granville. The situation of the tract is considered by all that I have heard speak of it to be far superior to anything there is going at present. . What the reason is that it has not been taken before is strange but the drift has been to the interior. The climate is thought by all that have visited those parts to be equally as good as it is here - some think it is less subject to frost although there were reports to the contrary at the commencement of its settlement. There has been a great many from here to G River after land and all agree in saying that it is the most beautiful part of the territory. the land is all good in that vicinity I am informed. The land office will not open again before the 1st of Jan Anderson will be down in 3 or 4 weeks and I shall probably know about it. It is almost impossible to conceive how fast government lands are selling I think the opening of the navigation in the spring will close the concern in Michigan any decent land will then be worth 5 dollars per acre without doubt."
Autograph Letter Signed "T. Williams"

on lower portion and verso of a typed letter on Esquire magazine letterhead November 8 1967 signed by Rachel Gallagher Editoral Associate. 10 1/2" x 7 1/4". 1 1/2 pages. A remarkable letter in answer to Gallagher's inquiry stating that Esquire is planning a feature on the salutary effects of a number of drugs on the market mentioning an article in Life magazine regarding the drug Dilantin and wondering if Williams would agree to participate in the article: "Dear Miss Gallagher - I am very interested in pills that don't contain barbiturates or amphetamine. At night I take two doriden tablets and a 100 milligram mellaril - and I have no deleterious effect from them. Pills are dangerous but sometimes danger must be accepted. I think we all know that. I shall try to get hold of the piece on Dillantin sic which is a pill I never heard of. I always check out with my doctor whatever I take. To combine pills with an excessive amount of alcohol is the greatest indiscretion and one I avoid." William's apparently failed to follow his own advice. His death in 1987 was brought about by his choking on the cap of a pill container. Williams 1914-87 Mississippi-born playwright and novelist; winner of 2 Pulitzer Prizes for drama "A Streetcar Named Desire" 1948 and "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" 1955.

WILLIAMS, Wayland Wells (1888-1945)
Autograph Note Signed / Autograph Manuscript unsigned / Inscribed Book
Hardcover. Popular American novelist whose works include "The Whirligig of Time" 1916 "Family" 1923 "The Seafarers" 1924 and "I the King: The Story of a Rich Young Man" 1924. Superb trio of items: First an ANS 1p 5¼" X 6 3/4" New Haven CT 1923 March 26. Addressed to Professor Albert Johannsen author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" University of Oklahoma Press 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Near fine. "In answer to your request" writes Williams "I enclose a page from the MS of my novel 'Goshen Street.' It must have been written in the summer of 1919." Bold full signature. Second the aforementioned manuscript page an unsigned AM 1p 8½" X 11" n.p. n.y. Near fine. Full holograph leaf in pencil and marked as page 294 from this novel published by Frederic A. Stokes Company in New York in 1920. Williams' script is as usual hurried by fairly legible. Also present is Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing a printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen. Third and last -- but certainly not least is an inscribed first edition of "Goshen Street." Small 8vo. Brown cloth. 323pp. Very good. Slight bit of edgewear and bumped corners but tight and attractive overall. Delightfully this is Williams' personal copy of his book bearing his handsome custom bookplate on the front pastedown. Opposite this on the front flyleaf he inscribes it boldly and whimsically -- to himself! "W.W. Williams / from / The Author. / Harding Day 1920. / On this day W.L. Phelps talked / of this book in his public lecture / and this copy was used by him / in reviewing the work for the N.Y. / Times Sunday Oct. 31." Phelps 1865-1943 was an English professor at Yale University 1892-1933 and a popular and influential literary critic essayist and lecturer. Do you call it an "association copy" when the author inscribes it to himself Why Phelps would be using Williams' personal copy of "Goshen Street" as his review copy or how Williams ended up Phelps' review copy is a mystery -- though the fact that Williams and Phelps both lived in New Haven probably had something to do with it! An incredibly unusual and handsome trio. hardcover
