Translated by Veselovsky a leading literary theorist and expert on Medieval Italian literature.<br /><br />In a handsome contemporary binding from the library of Albert McGill a wealthy industrialist and part of the influential British community in 19th century Russia. The first McGills in Moscow were most-likely Albert's grandfather Robert McGill and his brother David who emigrated from Paisley in the 1840s. The family is credited with starting the first mechanical and foundry works in Russia as well playing an important role in the country's cotton mill industry. Just like any other British Family living in the 19th century Moscow the McGill family was related by marriage to several other British families and Albert was no exception. His wife Eleonora McGill née Gibson was the daughter of Charles John Gibson or Karl Yakovlevich Gibson as he was known was director of the Nevsky Stearin Factory in Moscow which produced soap. Hardcover full leather red over boards. 8vo. xix 576 pp. Illustrated with 24 full-page plate drawings by artist Jean de Bosschere: 16 in full colour including tissue guarded frontispiece and 8 in b/w. Binding by George Bayntun marked on the upper left corner of the verso of the front flyleaf. Six compartment spine with five slightly raised ribs. Black leather label with gilt title in compartment 2; green leather label with illustrator in compartment three. Gilt borders rulings and dentelle on the spine. Gilt double line border and dentelle edges on the front and back boards. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Half title present. Text block shows slight age toning to the edges but overall it is clean bright unmarked and square with a strong binding. The spine and boards have mild shelf wear but the gilt ornamentation is still bright and whole. Slight creases along the spine and hinges but the leather is still subtle. The inscription "850.2" has been written in the first compartment on the spine in marker. A very bright and handsome copy in very good condition. Garden City Publishing Company unknown
