Elegantly bound in full straight grain morocco with gilt detailing. An English translation of this important piece of early Italian literature written by Italian poet author and Renaissance humanist Giovanni Boccaccio. Boccaccio's work consists of a frame narrative containing one hundred tales told by a group sheltering in a secluded villa to escape the Black Death. Boccaccio probably conceived of the Decameron after the plague epidemic of 1348 and completed it by 1353.Illustrated with a frontispiece to volume I. Bound in full straight grain morocco with gilt detailing. Externally very good with some rubbing to the joints and extremities. Slight loss loss to the backstrip head of IV and a touch to III. Perhaps most importantly to English literature the DECAMERON is believed to be the biggest influence on Chaucer though perhaps through an anonymous translation for the structure of his CANTERBURY TALES.<br> The work is a gathering of tales from several sources created by Boccaccio and written over several years but finally collected under one title between 1349 and 1351. The story is of seven women and three men who have left Florence for ten days in order to avoid the plague. They depart for neighboring villas and over the course of the next ten days each person tells a tale to entertain the others. Translated and illustrated by Josef Pierre Nuyttens. 4 of 5 volumes lacking the last volume folio 15.25 x 11.25 inches bound in full brown pigskin with watered silk endpapers and printed on very thick handmade paper. The first volume is in fair condition at best with front board detached and much rubbing and wear including a long jagged scar to cover. The other volumes are in very good condition with light wear to edges and joints contents very good: a few of the plates have some faint rusty foxing to margins. Illustrated with 7 fine pen drawings hand colored by Nuyttens and the publisher C. B. Randall has illustrated the volukmes with several smaller vignettes in ink watercolor and gouache and occasional hand-colored and illuminated letters all initialed C. B. R. It will be clear to anyone that Randall is without much talent skill or sense of draughtsmanship but he sure liked to make fancy books. He is also noted for publishing a lavish edition of the works of James Whitcomb Riley. Nuyttens 1885-1960 was a Belgian-American artist now mostly known for his illustrations for four non-Oz novels by L. Frank Baum. He died in a house fire that destroyed a good deal of his art. C. B. A few old effaced inscriptions.An attractive copy of the second edition of De mulieribus claris in French using the text of Antoine Vérard's edition of 1493. Although Vérard had tried to pass the translation off as his own it was in fact a slightly revised version of an anonymous French translation made ca. 1401. Vérard's editions of Boccaccio in French had made the writer more accessible to a French public but it was not until the sixteenth century that his works became more widely known and frequently imitated. This was the "golden age" for Boccaccio in France which would draw to a close with the restrictions placed by the Church on the racier passages of the Decameron.On Famous Women was the first biographical survey devoted exclusively to women in Western literature. But in spite of the plethora of surviving Latin manuscripts of the text Boccaccio's survey of 106 women of distinction some for their vices drawn from the Bible mythology history and from amongst Boccaccio's contemporaries was of less interest to sixteenth-century French readers than Griseldis Fiametta or indeed the Decameron. Forty-five years had passed since the appearance of the first printed edition in French before a group of Paris publisher-booksellers decided to publish the work anew. In order either to blanket the market to obviate pirate editions or to spread the risk no fewer than thirteen booksellers shared this pocket-sized edition. The first and last quires containing the titles colophons and publishers' devices appear to have been reset for the various issues cf. Hortis's transcriptions. The present copy bears the imprint of Philippe Le Noir and the woodcut device of Guillaume Le Bret. The printer was recently identified as Jean Réal whose metalcut capital initials are used at the head of each chapter. This was the first book from his press. The typographic manicules in the text were added by the printer as a finding aid to signal the Latin articulating phrases left in by the translator the Latin phrases appear also in Vérard's edition but without any specific typographic mark highlighting them.Two US copies located at Princeton and Smith College. Wear to corners rubbing to cover edges and spine ends and edges remarkably clean text with only very occasional scattered foxing. Some light chipping to spine of Vol. I-II first book which has a bookplate at front pastedown. Original pink place-keeping ribbons present. The Decameron is a collection of medieval allegorical short stories written in the mid-14th century and is considered central to the Western canon influencing writers ranging from Geoffrey Chaucer to George Eliot.
