(Blake, William) Malkin, Benjamin Heath
A Father's Memoirs of His Child
London: T. Bensley for Longman Hurst Rees and Orme 1806. First edition. Engraved frontispiece by Robert Cromek after the design by William Blake and Haye and three plates one folding map. xlviii 172 pp. 1 vols. 8vo 25 x 15.5 cm. UNCUT in the original boards; rebacked in cloth endpapers renewed. Fine tall copy. First edition. Engraved frontispiece by Robert Cromek after the design by William Blake and Haye and three plates one folding map. xlviii 172 pp. 1 vols. 8vo 25 x 15.5 cm. A book of paramount importance to Blake studies. Malkin was a personal friend of William Blake with whom he shared an interest in radical politics and on the death of his gifted six-year-old son Thomas in 1802 Malkin commissioned Blake to design the frontispiece for Malkin's FATHER'S MEMOIR. In his Preface to this work Malkin gives what the DNB calls the "first and fullest" account of Blake's early life and career and it was with this very tribute to his friend's idiosyncratic genius that Malkin first gave impetus to a more general appreciation of William Blake's art. The letter is on William Blake Trust headed paper with the address corrected by hand by Keynes. He has completely filled the two sides of the letter even writing in the margins. The letter dated 25 May 1917 covers in much detail the way that Blake produced his coloured printing. Keynes admits much is guess work at this time. 263pp including index. Frontis with illustrations. A few stains to upper edge o/w a very nice copy in shelf worn and slightly soiled wrapper sunned to spine and slightly worn along top edge. A unique copy. Near fine. unknown

(Blake, William) Otto, Peter:
Blake's Critique of Transcendence. Love Jealousy and the Sublime in the Four Zoas.
-Oxford University Press 2000-. First edition. xiv365 pages with index. Illustrated. Cloth. Fine in fine dustjacket. Blake's Critique of Transcendence is the first full-length book to examine in any detail or consistency the relation between Blake's text and the visual designs in The Four Zoas one of the most important works in Blake's oeuvre. It uncovers a Blake deeply engaged with the cultural discourses of his time in profound dialogue with Swedenborg Locke and Young. In the course of this conversation Blake anatomizes a remarkable variety of cultural practices including religion science and art designed to achieve transcendence. He focuses in particular on the fate of the body in cultures of transcendence developing perhaps the first theory of sexual sublimation. Blake's radical visual and verbal strategies in this poem are part of an attempt to defer the movement of transcendence long enough for the reader to see the warring elements of the fallen world as the dismembered body of humanity.
