Printed broadside 5" x 8" with salutation in ink manuscript. Some margin browning and light margin chipping else Very Good.<br/><br/> Blake was Pastor of the First Congregational Church in Waupun. Beneath his printed signature is written in ink "Pastor Cong. Ch". Professor Conatty was T.J. Conatty a public school teacher in Kenosha and a prominent figure in the Wisconsin Teachers' Association. He was later implicated in a bribery scheme with James Rood Doolittle Senator from Wisconsin 1857-1869. On Conatty's behalf Doolittle was to use his influence with President Lincoln to obtain cotton permits during General Banks's occupation of New Orleans; in return Doolittle would receive 25% of the profits. We haven't ascertained whether Senator Doolittle is the "Br. Doolittle" to whom this printed letter is addressed. <br/> This unusual ephemeral Civil War broadside is unrecorded. Waupun is in southeastern Wisconsin about sixty miles northwest of Milwaukee.<br/>Not located on OCLC as of October 2020 or anywhere else. unknown books

<p><b>BLAKE EUBIE</b>. 1883-1983. American ragtime pianist and composer of "I'm Just Wild about Harry" "Love Will Find a Way" "Charleston Rag" "Memories of You" and other hits. AMusMsS. <i>"Eubie Blake"</i>. 8pp. Small folio roughly 9½" x 12½". N.p.; after 1959. An autograph piano vocal score in pencil of his most famous song "I'm Just Wild about Harry" with notable differences from the original 1921 sheet music version. Seven pages of music and lyrics on four sheets of "King Brand" lined music paper totaling 90 triple measures in E-flat Major set to ¾ time; each page bearing Blake's 1959 Local 802 union stamp. Blake has written on the cover in blue ink "<i>I think Harry would be better for Waltz if Key of C. Sorry about this number in Lead Pencle</i>sic." He has added his initials "<i>E.B.</i>" in red ink to each of these two lines. The first page of music is headed "'<i>I'm Just Wild about Harry' The New Arrangement for Miss Swann Words by Noble Sissle Music by Eubie Blake</i>."</p><p>Blake the son of former slaves who nurtured their child's musical talent began composing while playing in clubs bordellos medicine shows and on the vaudeville circuit where he met composer Noble Sissle and formed the Dixie Duo. Together they composed the groundbreaking musical revue <i>Shuffle Along</i> with playwrights Flournoy Miller and Aubrey Lyles whom they had met at an NAACP benefit. </p><p>After touring New Jersey and Pennsylvania <i>Shuffle Along </i>premiered on Broadway in 1921 and was an instant hit running for an unprecedented 504 performances and defying conventional wisdom that a show written by and starring African-Americans could be commercially successful. <i>Shuffle Along</i>launched the careers of Josephine Baker and Paul Robeson and was the first Broadway show to feature an all-black cast. Additionally its hit song "I'm Just Wild about Harry" broke the taboo against onstage romantic love between African-American characters.</p><p>One of only three songs written specifically for the show "I'm Just Wild about Harry" was originally composed by Blake as a Viennese waltz but "Lottie Gee the veteran performer who introduced it said for her to make it work it would have to be an up-temp one step. 'That cut me to the quick' Blake remembered. 'She was going to destroy my beautiful melody. I loved that waltz. Then Sissle went along with her… 'All right' I said 'we'll make it a one step'" <i>America's Songs: The Stories Behind the Songs of Broadway Hollywood and Tin Pan Alley</i> Furia and Lasser. Blake's handwritten notes on our manuscript's cover indicates that he still preferred a waltz tempo for his most famous song nearly 40 years after its debut. </p><p>The popularity of "I'm Just Wild about Harry" was revived in 1948 when President Harry S Truman used it during his reelection campaign. Detractors joked "I'm just mild about Harry." In recognition of its use Blake sent a manuscript excerpt of the song to Truman in 1967 erroneously reported on the internet as the original manuscript with a letter that stated "The interesting thing about 'Harry' was that it actually was written as an election song in the show whose plot was almost a parallel occurrence to the 1948 Presidential Campaign. The story was about the race for Mayor in a small Southern town. Our hero Harry Walton was the underdog in his race just as you were in the Election of 1948. Although we did not have a <u>Chicago Tribune</u>telling the people that his rival had been elected it first appeared that one of the candidates opposing Harry in our Race had won." </p><p>Among Blake's papers at the Maryland Historical Society are manuscripts of the song including one from 1959. However ours differs in both scoring and lyrics. Although Blake agreed to write out quotations from his best-known work this is the only full manuscript version of the song ever to be offered for sale. It belonged to Jazz musician Jim Hession Blake's friend and protégé. </p><p>Some scattered staining and wear with reinforced file holes in the left margin. In very good condition. One of America's most popular and enduring melodies with a long and fascinating history.</p> books

The document amends an agreement regarding publication of a biography of Blake by Al Rose and Schirmer Books a division of Macmillan. The first change states that "The publisher shall copyright the Work in the names of Al Rose and Eubie Blake." The second change denotes payments of royalties. Blake is the last to sign above his typed name "Eubie Blake." Jazz historian Al Rose signs just above. Schirmer pulbished "Eubie Blake" in November 1979. With long time collaborator Noble Sissle Blake wrote the Broadway musical "Shuffle Along" in 1921 one of the first Broadway musicals to be written and directed by African Americans. Blake's compositions included such hits as "Bandana Days" "Charleston Rag" "Love Will Find A Way" "Memories of You" and "I'm Just Wild About Harry". The musical "Eubie" which featured the collected works of Eubie Blake opened on Broadway in 1978. unknown books

An archive of family letters written to Gratia Turnbull Fuller Blake during the mid-19th century covering a wide range of historic topics including the U.S. Civil War slavery yellow fever and a legal dispute over land in New York City. Born in Lawrence Ohio Gratia married Cincinnattus Blake 1830-1918 a farmer Union soldier and Sheriff of Gallipolis Ohio in 1857. Together they raised six sons. This archive contains a six-page letter Gratia received from her sister-in-law Mary B Fuller. Mary's husband Gratia's brother was Captain Emilius Fuller 1815-63 a Confederate Army officer commander of the St. Martin Rangers Company Infantry in Louisiana and captain of a boat called the Queen of the West. He was seriously wounded and taken prisoner when his boat was destroyed in Bayou Teche on April 14 1863. He was transferred to Johnson's Island Ohio where he died on July 25. In her letter dated December 15 1867 Mary's bitter feelings about slavery and the war are still fresh. "I have the most of my work to do myself. I prefer doing it rather than have a free trifling negress around me. Their impudence I cannot ensure" she wrote from her home in St. Martinsville Louisiana. "They are free as they may stave with their freedom for all I care. I can have a woman by feeding her of giving her a cabin or a room to sleep in and that would cost me less than when I owned them for then we had to clothe feed and take care of them when sick. Many of them are getting their eyes opened and say they have had no good times since the Yankees came among them." Along with their personal losses Mary's family is concerned about an outbreak of yellow fever. Her son James wrote to his Aunt Gratia on October 26 1867 about "yellow jack" which caused 1/3 of the St. Martinsville population to flee: "133 names are published of the victims and except for one or two - they all died since September 11 and about 2/3 of the names only are given which would swell the mortuary list to about 200." An undated letter from her sister-in-law Julia Blake Eaton 1836-1927 includes a negative report of her visit to Cincinnati: "I saw too much suffering while there to feel very happy. I saw a great many of the poor fellows that were wounded at Pittsburgh carried off the steamboats. Poor fellows. God help them." This collection contains 15 letters written in 1856-58 by Cincinnatis to Gratia before they were married. In October 1856 he wrote about all he is doing to yield a living from his Ohio farmlands in order tomake a home for his future bride: "If I do not buy a house I shall have to build such as my means will allow. I shall have to earn part of the money if not raise my wagon cover and live under it. If my hut is of cornstalks and brush I shall be happy if Gratia will share it with me." Another group of nine letters was written by Cincinnatis to Gratia in 1877-78 when he was running a steamboat operation taking potatoes from his farm in Ohio to market in New Orleans along with other goods such as coal picked up along the way. "No good news to speak of and a great deal of bad news" he wrote on November 10 1878. "Lost the big boat Trowbridge have only the small boat Blake left us. We can only run a part of a day or night at a time the wind is blowing now . the wind blew so hard that the waves came over the side splashboards . I think this is my last March trip forever and if we get this one down safe I think it a miracle." The collection includes three other letters written to his "boys" and the family during this period. Another group of letters in this archive are related to the ongoing dispute over property in New York with a branch of Cincinnatus Blake's family known as the "Brower heirs". His sister Visalia wrote on March 4 1867 urging him to join other members of the family to cooperatively hire an attorney to pursue their rights: "We will proceed to enter into a contract with the lawyer whom we have selected as our council by which he will be bound to proceed to collect the necessary evidence to prove our heirship and title to the property in question as take such proceedings as may be necessary to enforce that title against the Trinity Church Corporation." Cincinnatus Blake was apparently distantly related to Anneke or Annetje Jans who purchased a 62-acre piece of land in Manhattan which her living children sold upon her death in 1671. A great-grandson of Jans Cornelius Bogardus later claimed his branch of the family had not legally given up its right to the property since his grandfather one of Anneke's six children had been dead at the time of the sale and were owed one-sixth of the sale. After a century of legal dispute the court rejected the claims. This collection includes a dozen other brief notes and letters from friends during the period. The latest letter in this collection is dated 1884 written to Gratia by her son Charles O. Blake 1860-1924 who asks for money as he is stuck in Fairplay Colorado likely trying to cash in on the gold rush: "I am still a prisoner in this dammed town and see no prospect of getting out of it until I borrow money of you." The collection also includes about a dozen mailing envelopes. The materials are housed in mylar sleeves. Most were folded for mailing with some edgewear and occasional soiling. All are legible and in very good condition. A fascinating archive rich in content. unknown books
