‎Fair. Quarto 233 × 180 mm one page; Paris 8 October 1840. Fine parchment with horizontal and vertical folds; traces of prior mounting including some tape-stains visible on the recto but clear of the large signature; in decent condition. Louis Philippe instructs the Ambassador to Russia to attend the opening of the new session of Parliament in Paris after the fall of the second Thiers administration. The document is countersigned by the Garde des Sceaux Alexandre-François Vivien. Offered with a small pen-and-ink botanical drawing 200 × 125 mm by the king signed with Louis Philippe's distinctive initials beneath the date '7 Janvier 1835'. At the head of the drawing is the inscription 'Hommage du présent dessin du Roi Louis Philippe par le Président des Sauveteurs Guérin de Tencin' and the inkstamp of the 'Sauveteurs Médaillés . de la Seine'. <p>Provenance: Collection of The Hon Barry Jones AC. unknown‎

York House Twickenham 8th May From the papers of General William FARRAR SMITH 1824-1903 was known as "Baldy" Smith was a Union general in the American Civil War notable for attracting the extremes of glory and blame. He was praised for his gallantry in the Seven Days Battles and the Battle of Antietam but was demoted for professional and political reasons after the disastrous defeat at the Battle of Fredericksburg. Louis Philippe Albert was the grandson of France's last reigning monarch - King Louis Philippe. He acquired a claim to the French throne after the death of his father Prince Ferdinand-Philippe in a carriage accident in 1842. Exiled to England after King Louis Philippe was deposed in 1848 he joined the Union cause in the American Civil War serving on the staff of General George McClellan with the rank of Captain. In this capacity he was actively involved in several battles of McClellan's Peninsular Campaign of 1862. As US-French relations deteriorated following the introduction of French troops into Mexico the Count returned to Europe in 1863. He returned to France in 1871 living quietly there until the French Republic banished all claimants to the throne from the country in 1886. The Count wrote an 8-volume history of the American Civil War. unknown‎
