‎British Quad Publicity Poster for: LADY CHATTERLEY'S LOVER‎

‎Np: Regie du Film / Orsay / Columbia 1957. Vintage 30 x 40" 75 x 100 cm. British quad screen printed pictorial poster. Repeated folds some offsetting and light soiling to an area of the white lettering small breaks at folds in margins a used but essentially very good copy. A British quad publicity poster for the brief 1957 English language release of this 1955 French film adaptation of Lawrence's 1928 novel directed by Marc Allégret starring Danielle Darrieux Leo Genn Erno Crisa and Janine Crispin et al. The poster makes much of the novel's continued status as a 'banned book' in its unexpurgated form and as tepid as it is the film was also banned in the US until a court ruling in its favor. While artistically a fairly crude piece of work this quad is a much more visually appealing poster than that for the short-lived US 1957 release. Both are uncommon. He left his collection to the King. He also studied the archaeological remains of the Gauls and Volumes III-VII are titled "Recueil d'Antiquites Egyptiennes Etrusques Grecques Romaines et Gauloises." Bound in full calf the spines in six compartments gilt with rococo floral tools and two morocco lettering-pieces. Wear to extremities; one board detached from each of Volumes III and III; rear board of VII loose; some superficial splits to hinges and abrasions to boards. Light spotting here and there faint dampstain to margins of two volumes discoloration to tops of a few boards but on the whole internally clean. Priv; 1p. acteurs bound before title leaf. Collation: pi1 A4 A-D alternating 8s & 4s; C12 D6. Browning to text a few margins notes shaved but a good copy.

La Mort de Cyrus is a tragic-comedy is based one of the early French novels of the period especially that of Le Grand Cyrus of Madeline de Scudery ten vols. 1649-53 which was taken from the histories Herodotus and Xenophon. Quinault's play was substantially changed by altering Cyrus' attitude toward the queen and by staging the death of the three leading characters not two as in the histories. The play revolves around Cyrus' love for Tomiris who is forced to marry her general Odartise; otherwise Odartise will kill Cyrus. When the revenge plot unfolds Tomoris is unable to murder Odartise but Cyrus does.

In terms of theatrical form Quinault's tragedy is an early example of the tragic-comedy genre perfected by Thomas Corneille with his Berenice and Darius which were also based on French novels of the period. Quinault along with Thomas Corneille occupied an important place in the history of French drama between the zenith of Pierre Corneille and the rise of Racine. His early tragedies have not lasted compared to his operas to which he devoted himself after 1670. Quinault wrote libretti for the composer Jean Baptiste Lully and is credited with the introduction of dramatic action into the 17th French opera. According to two well-known 20th century critics Barnwell and Lancaster Quinault's La Mort de Cyrus influenced two of Jean Racine's works: Alexandre le Grand 1666 and also Andromaque 1667. According to Barnwell Racine's "Alexandre le Grand 1666 is a concession to contemporary fashion and constitutes a good example of the Romanesque tragedy in vogue when Racine was beginning to write for the theatre: superficially it has much in common with Thomas Corneille's Timocrate 1667 the greatest immediate success of the century and with Quinault's even more improbable but highly successful Mort de Cyrus 1658." Concerning Andromaque 1667 Lancaster wonders aloud: "Had not Racine become aware by then that the original version of his tragedy in which Andromaque's reappearance may derive from such plays as Quinault's La Mort de Cyrus weakened the obsessive hold of her own legendary past over his heroine Such considerations would reinforce Dr Elliot's contention that Andromaque in its original form is rooted in contemporary dramatic conventions."

References: Barnwell H.T. ‎Original Signed Halsman Photograph as Don Giovanni‎

‎Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Superlative original 1940's doubleweight photograph of the great Italian Basso in his most celebrated role inscribed and signed in white ink: "To Jean with happy remembrances of our stay together in the South Pacific and warmest wishes for Your happiness and future Ezio." Photographed by the American portrait photographer Philippe Halsman with photo credit printed in white on bottom right and stamped on the back. 8 x 10 inches.

Pinza famed for his charm and sex appeal as well as his rich bass voice first appeared as Don Giovanni in 1929. He would become particularly associated with the role after Bruno Walter engaged him to sing it in Salzburg in 1934. Walter was convinced that Pinza would be right for the part when he remembered the effect the singer had had on the Walters' cook when he visited the family in New York: after answering the door she ran back to Elsa Walter and whispered "Ma'am there's such a beautiful man outside." After the war years Pinza became a major celebrity in the USA as the first Emil de Becque in Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific winning hearts across the country with the hit "Some Enchanted Evening."
Born in Riga to a Jewish family Philippe Halsman began his career as a photographer in France in the 1930's and gained a reputation as one of the best portrait photographers in France. He escaped France for the U.S. after the German invasion with help from Albert Einstein. After working as a fashion photographer and collaborating with artists including Salvador Dali he became best known for his portraits of figures such as Einstein JFK Alfred Hitchcock Judy Garland Winston Churchill Marilyn Monroe and Pablo Picasso many of which appeared on the cover of Life magazine. unknown books‎
