Leading corners are very worn and bent with some fabric loss. Name penned on front pastedowns of both volumes. Bookseller's label on front pastedown of Volume 1. Integral ribbon bookmarks in both volumes. Noticeable age-spotting throughout both volumes. Binding is slightly loose at the beginning of Volume 1 but is sound otherwise. Text is clear. All edges brass bed gilt with marbling beneath gilt on the foreedge. 5 raised bands with gilt spine lettering. Inside of boards are doublures of dark blue morocco with elaborate gilt decoration including skull and cross bones in each of the 8 corners symbolic of the funeral orations of the text. End papers are blue watered China silk on outside and marbled on interior as well as on facing page. Joints have faint wear and and front hinge is slightly starting but overall this is a beautiful binding by a Parisian master. Printing of 274 copies this being number 8 of the first 13 which were done on China paper. Tipped in engraved frontis of author and others tipped in in text. Contains funeral orations by Boussuet delivered in the 17th century in honor of royalty and noblemen.
