September 1627 in Dijon; ? 12. April 1704 in Paris) war ein französischer Bischof und Autor. Er leistete einen bedeutenden Beitrag zur Geschichtsphilosophie und gilt den Franzosen als Klassiker unter ihren Kanzelrednern. ? Bossuet wuchs in einer Richterfamilie auf. Er wurde früh für die Priesterlaufbahn bestimmt und erhielt im Alter von neun Jahren die Tonsur. Seine Schulbildung erhielt er zunächst im Jesuitenkolleg von Dijon, dann im Collège de Navarre in Paris. Als Theologiestudent in Paris verkehrte er in einigen mondänen Salons und glänzte dort mit seiner Beredsamkeit (zum Beispiel in einer zu vorgerückter Stunde improvisierten Predigt). Nach der Priesterweihe und dem Doktorat 1652 wurde er Kanonikus (Domherr) im 1633 von Frankreich annektierten Metz, wo sein Vater ein Richteramt am neu gegründeten Parlement erhalten hatte. Hier machte er sich die Bekämpfung des Protestantismus zur vordringlichen Aufgabe und publizierte 1655 seine erste Schrift, die gegen den protestantischen Pfarrer Ferri gerichtete Réfutation [Widerlegung] du catéchisme de Paul Ferri. Daneben hielt er sich aber häufig auch in Paris auf und war dort Schüler des großen Predigers der Caritas Saint Vincent de Paul (1581-1660). Ab 1660 lebte er ganz in Paris und machte sich rasch einen Namen als Kanzelredner und Panegyriker. 1662 durfte er im Louvre vor König Ludwig XIV. und dem Hof die Fastenpredigt halten. Hiernach war er in Mode, obwohl er sich nicht scheute, gelegentlich den jungen König zu mehr Sittenstrenge zu ermahnen oder die Reichen an ihre Fürsorgepflicht gegenüber den Armen zu erinnern. Bossuet war aber auch, dank seiner langen Nähe zum König und seiner intimen Kenntnis der Verhältnisse am Hof, sehr aktiv in der Politik im engeren und weiteren Sinne, die er durch direkte Einwirkung sowie mittels zahlreicher Schriften zu beeinflussen suchte. Er war ein aktiver Vertreter des radikalen Absolutismus, wonach der König nicht nur den Staat beherrsche, sondern ihn mache. Als Mitglied des Grand Conseil de l'Église de France wuchs er zunehmend in die Rolle eines Primas der französischen Bischöfe hinein und wurde bekannt als streitbarer "Adler von Meaux". Augustinus beginnt und den Lauf der Menschheitsgeschichte als durchgehende Manifestation der göttlichen Vorsehung interpretiert, welche die Menschheit ihrem Seelenheil entgegenführt. Bossuet war der berühmte Hofprediger Ludwigs XIV., dessen gallikanische Kirchenpolitik er gegen die römische Kurie verteidigte. Seine Predigten, insbesondere seine großen Grabreden, sind eindrucksvolle Schaustücke dieses Genres der Barockliteratur. Potier de la Morandière was a Catholic knight in the brotherhood the Legion of Honor. Bossuet’s anti-Protestant and expositional writings would have greatly influenced Potier de la Morandière who lived in the time directly following the Bourbon Restoration 1814-1830 and later July Revolution 1830. These critical nineteenth-century movements followed the fall of Napoleon and came about to establish a constitutional monarchy for the French people. The unidentified arms on the cover are six ducks three and three supported by lion and griffin and surmounted by helm. Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet was a Dijonnaise bishop tutor to the dauphin of France and influential spokesman who made great efforts to assert the rights of the French church for and with papal authority in Rome. Bishop Bossuet published widely during his ecclesiastical career making important refutations that would popularly grow his position against the Protestant movement. Bossuet is traditionally regarded as a “master” of French Roman Catholic thought he was an excellent preacher and was greatly sympathized with among monarchs for his view on the absolute divine right of kings; for this latter position he would receive criticism in later times. Bossuet preached loud and persuasive eloquence on such matters he successfully reformed the Catholic faith among his people for forty years. Bossuet wrote this exposition of Catholic doctrine to help new Catholic converts assimilate to doctrinal rules. The Cramoisy printers enjoyed a legacy of fine printings under their family name; their Parisian business was known for their elegant productions. By the 1660s Parisian printer guilds were controlled by royal officials and decrees; this is thus a typical “approved” work for the French public during this period.
