BOSSUET Jacques Benigne 1672 1704
Exposition de la doctrine de lEglise catholique sur les matières de controverse
Paris: Cramoisy 1679. Hardcover. Very Good. 12mo 140 x 80 mm. 217pp. 19th century full brown armorial crushed-grained morocco by Triolat binder of Blois active 1880s all edges gilt spine plain in compartments; only slight edgewear otherwise very good. Bookplate of Jules Potier de la Morandière 1813-1883 French lawyer and architect remembered for his great contributions to the building and renovations of churches like Blois Cathedral and other stately monuments. Potier de la Morandière was a Catholic knight in the brotherhood the Legion of Honor. Bossuets anti-Protestant and expositional writings would have greatly influenced Potier de la Morandière who lived in the time directly following the Bourbon Restoration 1814-1830 and later July Revolution 1830. These critical nineteenth-century movements followed the fall of Napoleon and came about to establish a constitutional monarchy for the French people. The unidentified arms on the cover are six ducks three and three supported by lion and griffin and surmounted by helm. Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet was a Dijonnaise bishop tutor to the dauphin of France and influential spokesman who made great efforts to assert the rights of the French church for and with papal authority in Rome. Bishop Bossuet published widely during his ecclesiastical career making important refutations that would popularly grow his position against the Protestant movement. Bossuet is traditionally regarded as a master of French Roman Catholic thought he was an excellent preacher and was greatly sympathized with among monarchs for his view on the absolute divine right of kings; for this latter position he would receive criticism in later times. Bossuet preached loud and persuasive eloquence on such matters he successfully reformed the Catholic faith among his people for forty years. Bossuet wrote this exposition of Catholic doctrine to help new Catholic converts assimilate to doctrinal rules. The Cramoisy printers enjoyed a legacy of fine printings under their family name; their Parisian business was known for their elegant productions. By the 1660s Parisian printer guilds were controlled by royal officials and decrees; this is thus a typical approved work for the French public during this period. OCLC records early editions in 1671 1673 1680 1686 and editions throughout the 18th century as here. The connection to Potier de la Morandière pioneering French peer and architect makes this copy most interesting.

Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet was a Dijonnaise bishop tutor to the dauphin of France and influential spokesman who made great efforts to assert the rights of the French church for and with papal authority in Rome. Exposition de la doctrine de lEglise catholique sur les matières de controverse
Paris: S. Mabre-Cramoisy 1671. Hardcover. Very Good. 12mo 150 x 80cm. 8 189 1pp. 19th century purple morocco by Trautz-Bauzonnet bound for Comte Roger du Nord covers and spine gilt with his repeating crowned monogram as corner pieces; only slight edgewear otherwise good. Roger Édouard Léon comte Roger du Nord 1803-1881 was a diplomat and senator and would have been an expected sympathizer of Bossuets conservative views. By the middle of the 19th century Roger was quickly moving toward a diplomatic career. Firmly attached to the monarchy Roger rejected the republic of 1848 and became a candidate for the monarchist camp working in legislature. He faced imprisonment among several other falls from grace. Bossuets writings would have firmly resonated with the conservative French count-diplomat who eventually succeeded in reelection to the senate by the 1870s. The Trauzt-Bauzonnet binders were in active collaboration in Paris from 1830 and they were known for their elegant craftsmanship in gold tooling. Bossuet Bishop James Benign 1627 1704
History of the Variations of the Protestant Churches 2 Vol set
New York 1884: D & J Sadlier & Co. First Editions. Octavo. 372 and 369pp. One of the most powerful arguments against the schism started by the Protestants which inevitably ended in contradictory creeds none of which its most extreme leaders were willing to claim were infallible. Bossuet argues that the Reformation had created a false religion but "the truth which comes from God possesses from the first its complete perfection." Although the Lutheran apologist Viet Ludwig von Sechendorf attempted to refute Bossuet the careful reasoning still has much that modern scholars in both the Protestant and Catholic traditions agree is compelling. In one sense Henri Daniel-Rops has taken this argument and taken out some of the sting from Bossuet. When Manfred Fleischer recommended this work in the late 1960's he went against his fellow Lutherans but as a scholar preferred the search for historical assessments rather than those there are confessional. Bound in brown embossed cloth spine lettered in gilt pale yellow endpapers previous owners names in pencil a very nice sharp cornered set with some fading to spine and edges.
