‎Genève, Ledouble; A. Cherbuliez et Cie, 1840. In-8 de VI et de [7] à la page 160, couvertures vertes conservées. Non rogné, l'exemplaire est relié en demi-chagrin rouge, dos lisse orné de filets dorés, plats de papier gaufré rouge, encadrés d'une roulette et d'un filet doré.‎

‎Illustré de 8 hors-texte de l'auteur: 7 dessins, dont un formant le frontispice et une carte géographique, tirés sur papier fort. Seconde édition que l'on a longtemps considérée comme la première, tant celle de 1833 est rare: pour preuve, on en connaît aujourd'hui deux exemplaires uniquement. "On sait que presque la totalité des exemplaires de l'édition de 1833 ne fut pas mise en circulation et ainsi l'édition de 1840 a été réalisée avec les feuillets restants de l'édition de 1833, avec de très nombreuses variantes. Les cahiers 6, 7, et 10 (dernier) ont été entièrement recomposés; la Préface, page V et VI est différente de celle de 1833 et plus importante". Maurice Bridel, in "Bibliothèque Théophile Bringolf". Notre exemplaire est bien complet du feuillet blanc qui compte pour les pages 31 et 32. Bridel annonce un tirage à 400 exemplaires plus une trentaine sur papier fort. De la bibliothèque d'Albert Natural, avec son ex-libris. Exemplaire très frais (hormis une pâle mouillure à la carte et au second plat de couverture), dans une élégante reliure moderne. ‎Le premier volume est illustré de 54 compositions hors-texte, dont 15 par Calame, les autres d'après Topffer. Le second volume comporte 48 planches hors-texte. Et de très nombreuses gravures in-texte pour les deux volumes. Editions originales en volume et premiers tirages des très nombreuses illustrations dans et hors texte.Quelques brunissures claires pour le premier volume; les couvertures sont très fraîches; on a inséré en fin du premier volume le prospectus illustré de souscription et en fin du second l'Extrait du catalogue de Victor Lecou; brillantes reliures signées de G. Mercier. Le second volume est d'une surprenante fraîcheur! De la bibliothèque de Théophile Bringolf, avec son ex-libris répété dans chacun des volumes. Ces volumes ont figurés sous le numéro 162 dans le catalogue réalisé par Maurice Bridel en 1981. C'était alors parmi les 6 volumes les plus onéreux de cette fabuleuse bibliothèque.
