Splendid work with watercolour drawings of the orchids of France and Mediterranean countries by Edmond Gustave Camus 1852-1915 a pharmacist and botanist fascinated by the intricate taxonomy of the genus of the orchid. These original drawings are most likely part of a continuing project to write a comprehensive study on the complicated taxonomy of the genus orchid in these regions. This particular copy is dedicated by the author to his daughter Aimée see the dedication on the dedication leaf of the text-volume who would become a notable botanist herself. The work consists of a large folio atlas volume with three parts namely Iconographie des Orchidées des environs de Paris 40 drawings Iconographie des Orchidées de France 52 drawings and a third part called Orchidées 16 drawings without further specifications on the title. The first part was produced by the author in 12 copies whereas the second and third parts are entirely unrecorded. The text-volume contains heliographed plates with hand-written explanations to the orchids depicted in the first part Iconographie des Orchidées des environs de Paris. The large-folio drawings testify to Camus's outstanding craftsmanship both as a botanist and artist and to his love for the genus of orchids. With 42 original watercolour drawings highlighted with gum arabic each signed by the author. They are numbered 1-40 with a "duplicate" no. 25 and an unnumbered drawing not normally included in the series. The photogravure text volume with calligraphic wrapper-title and dedication and text reproduced from manuscript mostly from the author's autograph. The atlas volume with the watercolours mounted on heavy paper in the original green cloth portfolio.
30 ll. wrapper-title and 42 drawings.Splendid set of exquisite watercolour drawings of orchids from the neighbourhood of Paris one of only 12 sets produced by the author. They are meticulously drawn in black ink and beautifully coloured by the author signed by him and mounted on heavy paper. Each shows the entire plant with flowers stem leaves and root with detail drawings around it most of the detail drawings also coloured. The accidental inclusion of an extra drawing no. 25 shows the degree of variation when Camus made two drawings of the same plant. The unnumbered drawing is labelled "Ophrys Scolopax" in manuscript on the drawing itself. It is not usually included in the series but matches the others and is also signed by Camus.Camus 1852-1915 a pharmacist and botanist lived near l'Isle Adam about 15 kilometres north of Paris and numerous orchid varieties grew there. He therefore collected them and made drawings planning to publish an illustrated taxonomy. Difficulties with the editors ended the project prematurely so to make his work available to a few colleagues he laboriously made 12 sets of the 40 drawings and had the handwritten text printed by photogravure. He gave copies to two libraries and the others went to colleagues friends and family members. When he later added two more volumes he reproduced his drawings photographically.In very good condition with only minor wear to the spine of the wrappers for the text volume and to the portfolio for the atlas volume. Beautiful work with 52 watercolour drawings of the orchids of France. The orchids are drawn on smaller sheets measuring ca. 24.5×15.5 cm that have been pasted onto larger leaves.Camus wrote the name of the variety and that of the botanist who first described this particular orchid in block letters underneath the drawing. Drawings XXIV and XXXVII have been signed by him "E.G. Camus" the others are unsigned. Because of the small sheets on which the orchids have been drawn 16 varieties have been depicted in a lower and an upper half.Edmond Gustave Camus 1852-1915 a pharmacist and botanist was fascinated by the intricate taxonomy of the genus of the orchid. He lived close to l'Isle-Adam the habitat of numerous orchids and set out to collect the different varieties. The present 52 watercolour drawings are not listed in any of the bibliographies not even in the bibliography of the publications by E.G. Camus prepared by Henri Lecomte and Camus's daughter Aimée Antoinette in E.G. Camus Iconographie des Orchidées d'Europe Paris 1921-1929. These drawings testify to Camus's outstanding craftmanship both as a botanist and artist and to his love for orchids. More often "far right" is pejorative used by liberals to tar these groups with the taint of Fascism Nazism and other discredited ideologies. The European far right represents a confluence of many ideologies: nationalism socialism anti-Semitism authoritarianism. In the first half of the twentieth century the radical far right achieved its apotheosis in the regimes of Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany. But these movements have evolved significantly since 1945 as Far-Right Politics in Europe makes clear. The 1980s marked a turning point in political fortunes as national-populist parties began winning seats in European parliaments. Since the terrorist attacks of 9/11 in the United States a new wave has unfurled one that is explicitly anti-immigrant and Islamophobic in outlook. Though Europe's far-right parties differ in important respects they are motivated by a common sense of mission: to save their homelands from what they view as the corrosive effects of multiculturalism and globalization by creating a closed-off ethnically homogeneous society.
