There is a folding map near the end. A volume in the series: ESSEX UNITS IN THE WAR 1914-1919 but including history of the periods before and after. The first 84 pages address the Regiment's history from 1755-1914. Pages 85-199 cover World War I 1914-1919. The updated final section AFTER THE WAR is new to this edition. Autograph Letter Signed to 'My dear Alfred' Sir Adrian 1880-1963 Lieutenant-General V.C.
Alfred WAGG 1877-1969 the Merchant Banker his friend from WWI days thanking him and saying "I wish I had the chance of coming to see you but it looks rather hopeless" as he has damaged his shoulder and has to have "treatment twice daily . but if I have a chance of getting to the City I will look in" he returns "to Eire on Thursday but will be over again before long" he loves it "over there. Everyone cheerful & welcoming!" 1 side 4to 22 Down Street London W.1. 28th October small thin triangle missing at blank top right corner otherwise in fine condition Carton de Wiart was awarded the V.C. for his action on the Somme 3rd - 4th July 1916 during the capture and defence of La Boisselle. Already his feats were legendary. At the beginning of the war he was with the Camel Corps in Somaliland against the Dervishes where he lost his left eye. Then on the Western Front he lost his left hand. Altogether he was seriously wounded 8 times perhaps 11 over the course of his adventurous life. In his memoirs Happy Odyssey 1950 Carton de Wiart describes how in WWI when convalescing from wounds it was his habit to go to Brighton to the Waggs "who spoiled me to death". At the time of this letter he and his new second wife had recently begun to make their home in County Cork where he delighted to shoot and fish. unknown

8vo., First Edition, with a portrait frontispiece and front endpaper maps, endpapers lightly spotted; black cloth, backstrip lettered in silver, a good, firm copy in the dustwrapper, the latter mildly frayed and creased at edges. One of the earliest escape narratives. The author was captured near Tobruk whilst commanding 5th New Zealand Infantry Brigade and placed in Campo 12 near Florence. During his captivity he shared quarters with VC holders Neame and Carton de Wiart whose exploits he recorded in detail. Hargest was one of the highest ranking Allied escapers on WWII. After a successful home run he returned to Europe on D-Day with 50th (Northumbrian) Division to be killed in action two months later. Enser, p.149; Mulholland & Jordan, H28.
