‎EDITION ORIGINALE de ce « premier fragment d'une autobiographie ». Hors texte, 3 EAUX-FORTES originales du peintre vaudois Charles CLEMENT. Tirage à 496 exemplaires numérotés. Un des 450 sur papier à la main d'Auvergne. Rousseurs habituelles. >>>>> Comme à son habitude, pour cette première édition helvète d'un texte de Cendrars, l'écrivain se fait désirer. Décidé en 1925, cette Nuit dans la forêt ne verra le jour que quatre ans plus tard, grâce à la patience et la persévérance de Max Roth et Carl Sauter, les directeurs des éditions du Verseau. L'écrivain entre temps était en voyage, et avait déjà promis deux livres à René Hilsum et à Bernard Grasset qui eux aussi poireautaient. Le texte enfin envoyé en Suisse en juin 1929 -après différents stades d'écriture à plusieurs endroits du globe- ne signifie pas pour autant une parution imminente. Bien que par contrat Cendrars sache que l'édition serait illustrée, il met en doute les gravures de Clément dans une lettre en septembre à l'éditeur : « J'ai bien reçu les gravures de Clément. Je suis d'autant plus à l'aise pour vous en parler, que je ne les ai pas demandées. Je trouve ces illustrations tout à fait insuffisantes et d'assez mauvais goût quant à l'amputé. J'ai écrit dans ce sens à Mr. Clément, naturellement d'une façon moins entière qu'à vous... Dans ces conditions je me demande quelle valeur ces gravures ajoutent au livre... Voilà ce que je vous conseille : ne conserver des gravures de Mr. Clément que la première qui peut à la rigueur passer comme frontispice et ne pas mettre les trois autres dans le livre ». Après plusieurs tergiversations - pas de nom d'illustrateur en couverture, suppression d'une gravure où l'on voit effectivement la manche vide de l'écrivain, présente quand même dans les exemplaires sur Japon, et annulation de la préface de Paul Budry qui associe étroitement le travail de Cendrars et de Clément - le livre parait enfin en décembre 1929. Voilà pour la partie documentée; les mésaventures du volume ne s'arrêtent pas là puisque la rumeur veut qu'une grande partie du tirage mal entreposé se retrouvent couvert de vilaines piqûres, ce qui est le cas de cet exemplaire qui porte cependant la mention manuscrite " hommage d'estime les éditeurs". This the first Two Hands Press edition a facsimile - or "recreation" as the press prefers to describe it - of the first edition of 1913 lettered copy "X" of 30 lettered copies hors de commerce; there are also 150 numbered copies for a total edition of 180 copies. "Transsibérien" is considered a seminal avant-garde artist book of the 20th century; of the eleven copies of the original edition that have sold at auction in this century the average price realized has been about $200000. This is the first true facsimile using similar methods and materials as the first edition of 1913. <br/><br/>The original "La Prose du Transsibérien" was written designed and printed by letterpress and illustrated by pochoir in an edition that was stated to be 150 copies in three subsets in the French manner. The actual number completed has long been in dispute as has the number of surviving copies. A census by Kitty Marryat of the Two Hands Press located 40 copies; a French scholar claims to have recorded 73 copies but will not produce his list for examination. <br/><br/>The poem by Blaise Cendrars 1887-1961 Swiss-born modernist poet and novelist is a free verse free wheeling look at the poet's life and the events of the Russian Revolution as contemplated during a journey on the Trans-Siberian railway followed by a short poem about Paris. The letterpress text is printed in over 38 typefaces in four colors printed in 22 panels on a narrow long sheet. Cendrars's collaborator the artist Sonia Delaunay-Terk 1885-1979 interwove the text with colorful abstract pochoir that when folded made a relatively small accordion book but when fully opened was 78.25" by 14.25". Cendrars and Delaunay-Terk called it the "first simultaneous book." It created a sensation among those who saw it when it was first displayed particularly among those who were involved in the avant-garde artistic movement. <br/><br/>___DESCRIPTION: Artist book created by letterpress printing in four colours in sixteen print runs on a Heidelberg press which was digitally produced to match the original typefaces with the abstract artwork created using pochoir; when extended the "book" measures 78.25 by 14.25 inches folded accordion style vertically one time and horizontally twenty-one times which creates a 7.25 by 3.625 inch "book" paper label on one side of the folded "book" with the title and Kitty Marryat's signature that is enclosed in painted vellum wrappers. The folding pattern is deliberate such that "you can't actually see anything in the book neither the text nor the imagery until the book is completely unfolded" creating "a frisson of excitement as the book finally reveals itself". Blaise Cendrars nom de plume for Frederic-Louis Sauser 1887-1961 the "heir of Rimbaud" greatly influenced the European Modernist movement with his early works including this one which tells of the voyage of Cendrars through Russia on the Trans-Siberian Express in 1905 during the Russian Revolution. First published in 1913 it is still considered a milestone in the evolution of artist's books; it was interlaced with an abstract pochoir by Sonia Delaunay-Terk bound accordion style and would have measured almost 7 feet tall when unfolded. This version by The Old Stile Press illustrated in vinylcuts by Natalie d'Arbeloff keeps the almost-abstract nature of the original but with a modern sense. <br/><br/>___DESCRIPTION: Bound in red and blue paper boards gold cloth spine with bronze lettering the front cover being red and the back being blue the covers have the title printed in silver wrapping from the back to front in large woodcut type endpapers are of the same red and blue but with the the front blue and the back red half-title in French with a vinylcut of the author double-spread title page in black woodcut title and gold text Natalie d'Arbeloff's vinylcut images are printed direct from her original blocks in black ink the text was printed in twenty-four different colours "chosen at random from a battery of inks deemed suitable" N.
