This is number 26 of 100 copies and was printed with a duplicate set of plates on Japanese Vellum. These four books are clean tight square and internally unmarked but there is a 1955 gift inscription of the ffep of volume I. The corners are mildly bumped and there is light surface soil. They have 445484 512 508 pages with scattered light foxing and rubbed deckle edges illustrated with black & white plates bound in yellow/orange cloth covered boards with titles on paste downs on the spine. A fine bright and clean set throughout. Finely bound in attractive early nineteenth century full dark blue morocco bindings. Spines with five raised bands each with double gilt rules and decorative edge devices. The compartments double ruled and lettered in gilt. The non lettered panels also with triple blind ruling to the centre. Publication date at the bottom of each spine within a decorative border all in gilt. Boards with one wide and three thin gilt ruled borders surrounding three blind ruled ones. All board edges decorated in gilt. Turn-ins with double gilt ruled borders. Yellow coated endpapers. All edges gilt. Some minor rubbing to a few corners but overall this is a fine set in fine contemporary leather bindings. Lacking final leaf provided in manuscript facsimile and final blank. Variant title page lacks Andrew Crooke's address priority between the two if any is unknown. Additional printed title to Second Part. Modern binding in full leather to style. Engraved title to first part soiled and with inner margin extended. Some marginal worming and dampstaining a few contemporary marginal notes and the occasional tear but all text legible. "One of those universal works which are read by all ages at all times" PMM. Published in two volumes a decade apart in 1605 and 1615 Don Quixote is the most influential work of literature to emerge from the Spanish Golden Age and the entire Spanish literary canon. As a founding work of Western literature it is often cited as the first modern novel. Edgewear staining spine ends worn labels rubbed. Front and rear endsheets in several volumes show some staining but generally only affects blank leaves and pastedowns. Some foxing to interior pages. Some minor soilage besides. Shelfwear to calf boards with lower corner of first volume chipped and with raw spot. All corners have some bumping. Other rub or worn spots. Minor creasing or crinkles on a few preliminary pages endpapers but tight and sturdy overall. A very good copy of a highly sought after and beautiful edition.
