CELINE Louis Ferdinand.
Guignol's Band.
New York: New Directions 1954. A fine copy Octavo. Original grey cloth titles to spine in dark blue. A fine copy the spine ends just a touch bruised. First edition in English of Celine's semi-autobiographical novel exploring the life of a French soldier invalided during the First World War and living among "thieves pimps prostitutes fakers junkies cops and cut-throats" in London Commentary November 1954. It was not a success on its original publication in France in 1944 but the novel's outsider viewpoint and stream-of-consciousness style would certainly have appealed to the Beats and it contains stylistic similarities to Kerouac's On the Road. It is the story of Ferdinand Bardamu and his search for personal fulfillment in World War I in the lower depths of Paris through African jungles and finally in the slums of the United States and factories of Detroit. Celine Louis Ferdinand.; translated by John H. P. Parks
Journey to the End of the Night

Vision London 1950. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. "Louis-Ferdinand Celine's revulsion and anger at what he considered the idiocy and hypocrisy of society explodes from nearly every page of this novel. written in raw colloquial language 'Journey to the End of the Night' is a literary symphony of violence cruelty and obscene nihilism. This book shocked most critics when it was first published in France in 1932 but quickly became a success with the reading public in Europe and later in America. The story of the improbable yet convincingly described travels of the petit-bourgeois and largely autobiographical antihero Bardamu from the trenches of World War I to the African jungle to New York and Detroit and finally to life as a failed doctor in Paris takes the readers by the scruff and hurtles them toward the novel's inevitable sad conclusion." Pub.Info Author's first book; complete; unexpurgated. Purchased at W. Heffer & Sons Cambridge England; Pages are in Fine condition; Boards in Fair condition. Chipping to the top front cover of the dust jacket and to the top of the dust jacket spine. 1ST THUS.
Vision, London hardcover
