Thomas Carlyle
The French Revolution
Ward Lock Bowden and Co. Hardcover. Good. THERE ARE NO TARIFFS OR CUSTOMS DUTIES ON BOOKS. Three volumes in one with an introduction by G. T. Bettany and full page illustrations - black and white engravings such as Louis XVI on the scaffold. Familiar aspects of the French Revolution - the Culottes and the Sans Culottes Marie Antoinette the terror - all feature. Carlyle's style remains very readable. He frequently uses the historic present tense may address his readers has poetic moments and varies sentence types to keep the reader engaged as if they are watching the whole revolution evolving in front of them. At the time he started researching and writing it was a bare half a century old and would have felt recent enough. Green cloth-covered volume with black detail and gilt lettering; edges worn and corners bumped. No date but sixth edition. End papers browned; slight browning around page edges but not enough to interfere with the text. Front and back hinges cracked but binding is otherwise good. Overall good for its presumed age early twentieth century. Ward, Lock, Bowden and Co. hardcover

Octavo 8.75" x 5.75" A<br /> <br /> ABOUT THE BOOK SET <br /> <br /> The French Revolution: A History was written by the Scottish essayist historian and philosopher Thomas Carlyle. A massive undertaking which draws together a wide variety of sources Carlyle's history--despite the unusual style in which it is written--is considered to be an authoritative account of the early course of the Revolution. Carlyle's radical departure from the classical histories of the eighteenth century came as a shock to Victorian critics. Lady Morgan found the mere publishing of such a work premature and superfluous while censuring Carlyle's style. William Makepeace Thackeray found the style initially difficult yet ultimately rewarding and called the book's appearance "timely". Mill praised the work lavishly announcing that "This is not so much a history as an epic poem." The book immediately established Carlyle's reputation as an important 19th-century intellectual. It also served as a major influence on a number of his contemporaries including Charles Dickens who compulsively carried the book around with him and drew on it while producing A Tale of Two Cities. Martin Luther King Jr. often quoted from the third chapter of the sixth book of volume one saying: "We shall overcome because Carlyle is right 'No lie can live forever.'"<br /> <br /> ABOUT THE AUTHOR <br /> <br /> Thomas Carlyle December 1795 - February 1881 was a Scottish essayist historian and philosopher from the Scottish Lowlands. A leading writer of the Victorian era he exerted a profound influence on 19th-century art literature and philosophy. His works were highly regarded throughout Europe and North America. He founded the London Library contributed significantly to the creation of the National Portrait Galleries in London and Scotland was elected Lord Rector of Edinburgh University in 1865 and received the Pour le M rite in 1874 among other honors. <br /> <br /> CONDITION REPORT<br /> <br /> Both volumes are in VG antiquarian condition.
