‎Festival du Film Maudit. Biarritz 29 Juillet-5 Août 1949‎

‎Unpaginated 54 pp. volume produced in conjunction with the 1949 French film festival organized by the film club "Objectif 49" under the presidency of Jean Cocteau with the help of of Cinematheque Française with a jury composed of Cocteau René Clément Jean Grémillon Raymong Queneau Alexandre Astruc and Claude Mauriac each of whom contributed a text to the catalog program with illustrations and vignettes by Arthur Rimbaud Pablo Picasso Victor Hugo Charles Baudelaire Cocteau and others and reproductions from photographs. Some extremely minor toning to a few pages. Oblong 8vo. Original tie-bound wrpps. very minor dust-staining. Paris Editions Mazarine 1949. The term 'film maudit' "cursed film" was coined for the legendary 1949 Festival du Film Maudit held in Biarritz and organized by a group of writers filmmakers and critics united under the label "Nouvelle Critique". A jury led by Jean Cocteau curated and honored a group of films thought of as overlooked at the time. The term was also applied to a number of deliberately shocking and outré films at the festival. In writing about the festival Cocteau said "The time has come to honor the masterpieces of film art which have been buried alive and to sound the alarm. Cinema must free itself from slavery just like the many courageous people who are currently striving to achieve their freedom. Art which is inaccessible to young people will never be art." The festival had long-lasting effects on the intellectual appreciation of film and helped created the phenomenon of French cinephilia. Scarce; as of December 2019 WorldCat locates only three copies of this volume in North American institutions. unknown books‎

‎Autographed Letter Signed in French‎

‎St. Jean Ferret 1955. unbound. 1 page 10.75 x 8.25 inches St. Jean Ferret September 11 1955 in French untranslated to an unknown correspondent with interesting literary content in part: "Cher Monsieur" writing that he had sent an earlier letter and had not received an answer. He suggests that maybe his previous letter did not arrive or that the recipient did not think it worthwhile replying to. However he stresses that he does not trifle so to speak ever. Cocteau speaks of argot and mentions that he does not know the original text of "You Can Always Duck" 1943 by the British mystery writer Peter Cheyney but thinks the French translation by his correspondent is a masterpiece. He also would like to know the man who wrote pages 15-21 of "Alors toujours en blade" -- the title of the French translation 1947 of "You Can Always Duck." In closing Cocteau states "As the young woman of St. Germaine say 'it's feudal' and I think so." Natural folds; very good condition.

French playwright artist and designer.

unknown books‎

B&W photographs "This is a day-to-day account of how the film La Belle et la Bête Beauty and the Beast was made. Its interest however does not lie solely in the technical details of film-making but also in what is implicit in every line; how an artist goes about creating his work. The story of how Jean Cocteau mastered the giant dream-machine of the film and shaped his unit into a tool is exciting and full of a special kind of information which is only occasionally vouchsafed the casual reader." .
