BAKST. ALEXANDRE Arsene; COCTEAU Jean.
The Decorative Art of Léon Bakst.
London The Fine Art Society 1913. . First edition folio 41.3 x 28.5 cm; photographic portrait frontispiece & 77 plates tipped-in including 50 colour; very occasional marginal spotting; original publisher's half vellum over marbled boards; small stains to vellum. Very fresh example of this major luxury work on Bakst's art. 'Born in Russia in 1866 Léon Bakst belonged to that young generation of European artists who rebelled against 19th century stage realism which had become pedantic and literal without imagination or theatricality. There were no specialist trained theatre designers so painters like Léon Bakst turned their painting skills to theatre design. Bakst's fame lay in the ballets he designed for the Diaghilev Ballets Russes and huge pageant spectaculars for dancer and patron Ida Rubinstein. He died in 1924 but after nearly 100 years his magic is as potent as ever rediscovered by every generation. His influence was such that people who have never heard his name now see the world in a different way' Victoria & Albert Museum. London, The Fine Art Society, 1913. hardcover

Billy Kluver Jean Cocteau
Day with Picasso
MIT Press MA September 1997. Hardcover. Used - Very Good. In 1978 while collecting documentary photographs of the artists' community in Montparnasse from the first decades of the century Billy Kluver discovered that some previously unassociated photographs appeared to be related. The photographs showing Picasso Max Jacob Moise Kisling Modigliani and others at the Cafe de la Rotonde and on Boulevard du Montparnasse all seemed to have been taken on the same day. But the identity of the photographer and the occasion being recorded remained a mystery. Investigation eventually allowed him to identify the photographer as Jean Cocteau and to determine the day that Cocteau had taken the photographs: August 12 1916. In a tour de force of art historical research Kluver then reconstructed the precise scenario to which Cocteau's camera bore witness. With an investigator's eye for detail - noting when Picasso no longer carries an envelope or Max Jacob has acquired a decoration in his lapel - Kluver recreates a single afternoon in the lives of Picasso and friends. Besides the central 'portfolio' of photographs by Cocteau the book contains additional photographs and drawings short biographies of all the subjects and a historical section on the events and activities in the early-twentieth-century Montparnasse art world. In 1978 while collecting documentary photographs of the artists' community in Montparnasse from the first decades of the century Billy Kluver discovered some unassociated photographs. In a tour de force of art historical research Kluver reconstructed a scenario of the four hours depicted in the photographs. This book shows the results of his effort: a single afternoon in the lives of Picasso and friends a group of remarkable people in early 20th-century Paris. 70 illustrations. Very nice clean tight copy free of any marks. MIT Press (MA) hardcover
