It began as a thesis for the Fellowship of the Library Association and was submitted in August 1984. Twelve years is a long time to overhaul a thesis, and that at a time of great technological change in the supply of information; had I been starting to do so now, this would probably have been a different work, in a different format. The research was carried out in Glasgow, London, Oxford and during brief visits to Germany and North America. I am grateful for access at all the libraries which I visited and to all those which supplied materials on inter-library loan. Two libraries must be mentioned for special reasons. The British Library has been particularly accommodating in allowing me to consult its rich resources. There must be occasions when staff fetching books or at the North Library Gallery desk have sighed at seeing the same name, only partly legible, on application after application; but they have been unfailingly helpful. The Institute of Classical Studies Library has come to seem almost a second home in London. ? Herbert Ernst Wiegand absolvierte ein Studium der Philosophie, Geschichte, Germanistik und der Politikwissenschaft, das er 1966 mit dem Staatsexamen in Germanistik und Politikwissenschaft abschloss. 1968 erfolgte seine Promotion. Im Jahr 1972 wurde Wiegand Professor für theoretische Linguistik am Fachbereich 8, Allgemeine und germanistische Linguistik und Philologie, an der Philipps-Universität Marburg. Nach einer Tätigkeit an der Universität Düsseldorf (1974?77) wirkte er von 1977 bis zu seiner Emeritierung im Jahr 2004 an der Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg. Wiegands Forschungsschwerpunkte waren die Semantik und die Wörterbuchforschung. Insbesondere letztere hat er im deutschsprachigen Raum maßgeblich durch eine Vielzahl an Publikationen geprägt. Darüber hinaus war Wiegand Mitbegründer und/oder Mitherausgeber mehrerer für die Sprachwissenschaft und die Wörterbuchforschung zentraler Fachzeitschriften und Buchreihen (u. a.
