‎Bel exemplaire peu courant d'un grand classique, l'ouvrage est composé de trois « essais » dans lesquels il aborde deux thèmes nettement différents. Le premier est garanti à l'histoire des Juifs en Espagne depuis l'Antiquité jusqu'à l'expulsion ; le second est une étude de la littérature hispano-juive au Moyen Âge et ; le troisième traité de la littérature séfarade après 1492, en se concentrant sur les œuvres en espagnol des Juifs d'Amsterdam. les Estudios... d'Amador peuvent bien être considérés comme le précurseur de toute l'historiographie moderne sur les Juifs dans l'Espagne médiévale. Un quart de siècle plus tard, Amador de los Ríos publiera lui-même sa monumentale Histoire sociale, politique et religieuse des Juifs d'Espagne et du Portugal Joseph Germain Magnabal (1819-1894), professeur français et inspecteur de l'instruction publique, spécialiste du Siècle d'or espagnol.P2-2E bel exemplaire‎

‎Spirito bizzarro di nobile famiglia piacentina, Carlo Mascaretti (Americo Scarlatti è l'anagramma del suo nome) nelle enciclopedie è segnalato come scrittore e giornalista. Nato a Pianello Valtidone nel 1855, studiò a Roma, dove si laureò come avvocato. Spirito ribelle fondò alcune battagliere riviste che ebbero alterne fortune. Nel 1888 vinse un concorso per bibliotecari alla Nazionale di Roma. Schedava da libri e riviste tutte le stranezze letterarie, i bisticci, i nonsensi, le poesie parodistiche, i giochi retorici di cui era ghiotto. Collaborò alla "Rassegna settimanale" e alla quindicinale "Minerva", la "rivista delle riviste" diretta dal deputato Federico Garlanda. Fu lo stesso Garlanda a esortarlo a raccogliere in volumi quello che andava pubblicando in una rubrica dal buffo titolo maccheronico, Et ab hic et ab hoc. Alla fine di volumi ne pubblicò tredici, dal 1900, anno in cui uscì il suo primo volume dal titolo Amenità letterarie sino a dopo la sua morte, avvenuta nel 1928, quando la nipote, Pierina Osti, mise in ordine le annotazioni rimaste e fece uscire appunto l'ultimo libro.
