‎Pharmacopoea Belgica.The Hague Typographia Regia 1823. Large 4to 26 x 21 cm. With an engraved plate showing a hygrometer. This copy numbered 541 and with the authentication signature of Prof. Jac. Van Maanen. Contemporary boards rebacked with cloth and the original calf backstrip laid down.‎

‎XII 220 20 221-228 pp.First edition of the first pharmacopoeia for the United Kingdom of the Netherlands which included what is now Belgium. During the French occupation the Netherlands introduced a new modern institutionalized central government that made one general guideline for all apothecaries a logical step. All previous pharmacopoeias were declared obsolete and apothecaries were to follow the new general rules that could be consulted in the present publication. Every copy was numbered and signed for authenticity.Already in 1815 a commission was installed for the development of the Pharmacopoea Belgica consisting of the most highly regarded Dutch professors in the medical sciences. The members were amongst others: Nicolaas Cornelis de Fremery and Gerardus Vrolik. Florentinus Jacobus van Maanen who signed the books for authenticity was a medical doctor who worked in The Hague for the ministry of Internal Affairs. ‎VIII 208 pp.First and only edition of the pharmacopoeia for the department of Deux-Nèthes in the First French Republic which contained the present-day Belgian province of Antwerp and parts of the Dutch province of North Brabant. Intended to be a revision of the Antwerp pharmacopoeia of 1660! it was heavily inspired by the Pharmacopoea Batava published in Amsterdam in 1805. Jean-Bernard-Joseph van den Zande 1778-1833 doctor and professor of physics and chemistry headed the committee with L.H.J. Francken carrying out experiments and F.M. Verbert editing the book itself Like the Pharmacopoea Batava the Pharmacopoeia manualis Utriusque Nethae shows the ever increasing importance of chemical medicine over natural substances. Its official use proved to be short-lived as the department was incorporated in the United Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1814 which prescribed the Pharmacopoea Batava and from 1823 onward the Pharmacopoea Belgica.With the stamp of the Département des deux Néthes on the verso of the title-page. ‎6 8 242 3 1 blank pp.First edition of a translation into Dutch of medical recipes collected by the British physician George Bate 1608-1668 originally published as the Pharmacopoeia Bateana in 1688. Bate had been personal physician to Charles I Oliver Cromwell and Charles II and had been so highly regarded that his papers were collected and printed 19 years after his death. According to the foreword the Dutch publisher had given the book to a number of Dutch physicians including Steven Blankaart who recommended it be translated. Among Bates's recipes are a number of peculiar medicines such as "Aqua omnium Florum" made from cow-dung gathered in the month May and "Spiritus Sanguinis" made from the putrid blood of a young man distilled in the sand. A list of medical titles printed and sold by the publisher appears on the final two pages.With a 19th-century owner's inscription on the pastedown and a shelf mark on the front cover. Binding worn but still a good copy.
