Lobatschewsky's paper pp. 164-170. � First edition and THE FIRST PRINTING of any part of Lobatschefskij's FIRST MAJOR work on geometry as it is his own translation of the last to chapters of his "Geometriya" from 1823 a work which was never published in his lifetime. In its original form the "Geometriya" was published in 1909. - The geometrical studies which it contains led Lobatschewski to his main discovery the Non-Euclidean Geometry published in Russian in Kazan 1829 and in it he developes the idea of geometry independent of the fifth postulate. The last two chapters of the unpublished work is offered here and the chapters deals with the solution of triangles on given measurements and on probable errors in calculation deaply connected to his attempts to establish experimentally what sort of geometry obtains in the real world. - "The period 1835 to 1838 saw him concerned with writing "Novye nachalaa geometrii s polnoi teoriei parallellnykh" New Principles of Geometry with a Complete Theory of Parallels which incorporated a version of his first workthe still unpublished "Geometriya". The last two chapters of the book were abbriviated and translated for publication in Crelle's Journal in 1842." DSB.<br>"Lobachevsky was interested in the theory of parallels from at least 1815. Lecture notes of the period 1815-17 are ectant in which Lobachevsky attempts various waus to establish the Euclidean theory. he proves Legendre's two propositions and employs also the ideas of direction and infinite areas. In 1823 he prepared a treatise on geometry for use at the university but it obtained so unfavourable a report that it was not printed. The MS. remained buried in the University archives until it was discovered and printed in 1909. With full-page woodcut on reverse of title page, additional full-page woodcut on f. Jiv, and 17 half-page woodcuts in the text (with some repeats). Mid-18th-century boards using an 18th-century antiphonary. First edition of the author's first important work, an exhortation to fight the Turks, couched as a Latin tragedy. Jakob Locher (1471-1528) had been created poet laureate but months before. The volume is concluded by a "Dyalogus" against all forms of heresy (and including encomia and dedicatory addresses to the Emperor and the nobles of court and clergy). - Contains fine woodcuts, some of which were used previously in the Strasbourg editions of Terence and the Ship of Fools; at least six blocks were cut originally for this book. "The opening woodcut depicts the author and newly crowned poet laureate" (cf. von Arnim). This is the earlier impression without the armorial woodcut on fol. B6r (as in Schramm); the final line of fol. J3r still reads "tekos" (for "telos"). Typographical errors "Jacboi" on fol. L2r; "Daum" (for "Datum") in final line of fol. L3r; colophone reads "anno christo". A pinhead-sized wormhole throughout the blank margin (not touching text). Top edge trimmed rather closely in places; a few underlinings by a contemporary hand. Altogether a fine, very clean copy. Extremely rare; last seen in the trade more than a decade ago (Shipperdson-Field-Nakles copy, Christie's New York, 17 April 2000, lot 22: $15,275). HC 10153*. Newer late 19th century brown half calf w. gilt red title label and gilt ornamentation to back. Corners bumped. First leaf a bit soiled and with many old owener's names. Repair to upper part of first leaf due to worm-hole far prom affecting printed text. The two following leaves with small worm-hole to upper margin far from affecting text. Occasional soiling and minor brownspotting. Many leaves with contemporary marginal annotations and occasional contemporary underlinings. The marginal annotations have been fully preserved when the book was rebound and the margins have not been cut. Printed in double columns with 34 lines to each and headlines; rubricated throughout. 12 being title and Tabula 1 blank 139 ff. - i.e. with all 152 ff. including the blank which has been lacking in other identified copies. � Exceedingly scarce incunable-edition the first printed by Gran of the first general handbook for parish priests i.e. the first official parish handbook. Before Lochmaier's "Parrochiale curatorum" parish handbooks were usually written by the individual parish priests for their own use as no reliable official or general handbook existed. The "Parrochiale curatorum" describes all that a parish priest needs to know and as such it is the first work to remedy the great lack of such a work which had otherwise occasioned merely individual efforts.<br><br>The first printing of the work appeared without place and without date but not earlier than 1493. A reproduction of this edition appeared in Leipzig in 1497 by Kachelofen and in 1498 this the third edition of the work appeared in Hagenau. In 1499 Lotter produced yet an edition of the work in Leipzig and in 1500 Furter produced one in Basle. All these editions are scarce. The work continued to appear into the 16th century.<br><br>Heinrich Gran active en Hagenau 1489 - 1527 was a highly important German printer who introduced printing to the German city of Hagenau which in the 15th century was a city of much greater importance than it is today. Together with Mentelin and Eggestein he was one of the pioneers of book-printing in Alsace. <br><br>The great pioneering publisher Johann Rynmann of Augsburg was one of Gran's most important clients and the present work constitutes one of their very early collaborations. Between 1501 and 1527 Rynmann financed 174 out of the 213 works that Gran produced during this period. <br>Incunables by Gran are of great scarcity.<br><br>Graesse IV:243. Hain II:10169. unknown

Second edition, the earliest one obtainable and usually considered the first altogether (a single copy of an edition published by Da Ponte in 1582 has been discovered in the Biblioteca della Collegiata S. Pietro Apostolo in Broni near Pavia). The principal work of the Milan artist and theoretician of art, Giampaolo Lomazzo, has been called "the most complete treatise on the art theory, design, and iconography of the Mannerist period" (Arntzen/R.); indeed, "the true Bible of Mannerism" (cf. Schlosser). Purposefully divided into the mystical number of seven books, Lomazzo's treatise describes first proportions (with a discussion of Dürer, who was much-received in Italy), then the expression of feelings, colours, light and shade, linear perspective, and practical painting; the seventh and final book treats matter and substances, touching upon - and greatly expanding on - Armenini. "These last two chapters are of the greatest importance for understanding the essence of Mannerism, providing quite simply one of the most extensive accounts" (ibid.). - Some occasional browning and waterstaining near beginning; slight paper flaw to fol.
