First edition, 3 vols., bound in 4, 4to (279 x 185 mm), ONE OF 100 COPIES PRINTED ON THICK AND LARGE PAPER WITH EXTRA PLATES, [4], xxv, [7], 462,lxxix, [1]; [2], 555, [1]; [2], 298; [2], 299-622, lxiipp., with the author's wood-engraved device on each title-page, a wood engraving of the elaborately-quartered coat of arms of the Roxburghe Club on the dedication page, 85 engraved plates ((including the private plate of 'Diana de Poictiers' in vol. 2, which was apparently destroyed after only 50 copies had been printed, and a proof of the 'Prater' plate in vol. 3), 62 illustrations printed on fine and thin "India" paper and mounted on the text leaves, 55 other illustrations in the text, with the additional sixty engraved plates on 52 leaves from Lewis' Series of Groups bound in at the appropriate places as designated by Lewis in his 'Directions to the binder', contemporary notes in pencil to several endpapers and a few within the text, text and plates have staining of varying degrees, pale stain to many lower margins, a little damage to endpapers where bookplates have been removed, full red hard grain red morocco,,covers waterstained, spines lettered in gilt, all edges gilt. Unfortunately this handsome large paper copy has suffered from water damage sometime in the past, additional photographs are available upon request. This set with the additional set of etchings on india paper by George Lewis, of a classic work of the utmost importance for its wealth of eye-witness information and anecdotes about printed books, manuscripts, buildings, other artefacts and people, both from past centuries and from the author's own day, for the extraordinary collection of illustrations, mostly drawn during the tour itself, and finally as a sumptuous piece of book production. As soon as the book appeared, leading scholars derided Dibdin for his lack of scholarship, especially concerning early manuscripts and printed books. But one must distinguish between the extensive and extremely useful information about things and people Dibdin saw during his 1818 tour, and his own interpretations and conclusions, which now serve only as a window to the attitudes of the time. Dibdin's enthusiasm, readable style and entertaining anecdotes, moreover, caught the mood of his age, making the book extremely popular and influential. Lewis' A Series of Groups... was intended to accompany Dibdin's Tour but was rejected by Dibdin as unworthy of his book. Lewis, most perturbed, issued them at his own expense and presented his case in the eight-page Advertisement which was separately printed. Jackson 48; 56; 56n: Windle & Pippin A38a; A44; D13.

Superba LEGATURA di gran lusso in pelle color nocciola finemente zigrinata e granulosa,4 nervi prlugati da ornamenti a secco sui piatti, piatti inquadrati da cornice di filetti a secco, titolo oro al dorso, dentelle oro all'interno dei piatti, tagli riccamente dorati e lucenti, sguardie in candida seta cangiante e zigrinata. Nastrino segnalibro, ma staccato. Accuratissima veste tipografica su due colonne (in latino con francese a fronte, nitidissimi e minuscoli caratteri, iniziali grandi e ornate, carta di pregio. Jules DIDOT, della dinastia di prestigiosi fonditori e tipografi, attivi dal primo '700, boulevard d'Enfer (impresso in calce all'ultima pagina). Stranamente, al verso dell'occhiello: "Imprimé chez Bonaventure et Duchessois, 55 , quai des Augustins. Deduciamo che comunque i caratteri tipografici sono quelli dell Fonderie Didot.

Esemplare nella rara variante su carta arancione (usualmente si trova a stampa verde e rossa su fondo chiaro); mancante del dorso, per il resto in buone condizioni, pulito (normale uniforme brunitura delle carte). «Tre conferenze sulle nuove arti visive: sviluppo, principio estetico e stile futuro» è un importante contributo divulgativo dell’artista neoplastico olandese pubblicato nella serie dei manuali «Elck ’t beste» pubblicati dalla «Società per le buone ed economiche letture». Il design di questa serie fu elaborato dalla grafica Cato Berlage, poi maritata all’architetto Emil Strasser.

Volume in 4° antico, legatura coeva in piena pergamena, titolo manoscritto al dorso, sguardie (antica firma a pennino), frontespizio con bella marca tipografica lucchese, ampia dedicatoria al principe Querini, prefazione dell'autore, sommario, XXXII, 491 pp., errata. Quattro tavole ft. (su sei) di cui due grandi ripiegate. Opera davvero particolare ed interessante questa dell'abate ed archeologo lucchese, prende spunto da alcune osservazioni dell'autore sopra un Dittico d'avorio del 506 all'epoca rinvenuto in Lucca, unendo in questo compendio tutte le notizie, alcune riprese da vari e autorevoli autori, sull'argomento. La prima parte dell'opera è a carattere storiografico e tratta i Dittici in genere con un interessante disanima su alcune specifiche, come ad esempio, sulle materie adoperate per formare i Caratteri, con una succinta notizia di tutte quelle materie su cui un tempo scrissero gli Ebrei, gli Egizi, gli Etruschi, i Greci ed i Latini, ricercandone l'invenzione, l'uso e la durata, con l'indicazione di alcuni ritrovamenti, oppure sulla diversa Forma dei Libri antichi e dei molti e diversi nomi che furono loro dati, ancora sulle diverse specie di dittici e loro vario e differente uso, con la spiegazione degli strumenti usati per formare e sugellare i caratteri, sull'origine dei Calendari, dei Martirologi e delle Canonizzazioni da' Dittici; la seconda parte tratta dei dittici in particolare, prendendone in esame più di venticinque; mentre nella terza parte l'autore spiega alcuni Dittici e Trittici qui pubblicati per la prima volta, di cui molti conservati in Lucca. A completare l'opera un appendice su alcuni Necrologi e Calendari inediti. Splendida edizione originale, corredata di note e notizie bibliografiche, stampata a grandi margini su carta greve. Un vero peccato la mancanza delle due tavole, ma l'opera resta di indubbio valore ed interesse. In ottimo stato di conservazione.
