Book shows very little wear but has a bump at lower spine. Binding is solid and square, covers have sharp corners, exterior shows no other blemishes, text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. Very large book with full color, full page plates. Dust jacket shows the slightest signs of shelf wear only, no tears. Dust jacket is wrapped in a clear protective cover.

Two Volumes. pp. xxiii, 782 (1) + Plates in color. Small folios. Designed, printed, and bound (in full green linen, gold stamped) by John Johnson, at the Oxford University Press; set in Monotype Bell; on William Nash Special paper. Dust jackets and slipcase show some soiling and wear. Number 413 of an edition limited to only 1500 copies, signed by the artist. In the autumn of 1750 Smollett set out for Paris in order to collect material for another novel. The result of the tour was The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle, published in 1751. In some respects, this is the most remarkable of Smollett's novels; it is, also, the longest, and it maintains its vivacity and vigour throughout. Peregrine is a scoundrel with a very moderate sense of shame; he is also, in his elegant and rather witty way, a bully of the most refined cruelty, who is not content to feast on others' folly, but likes to pay for the feast with all kinds of insult and annoyance. It is still a fun read today. A handsomely produced edition. These would make a great gift. W96

Julian's life-journey invlves an encountter with a stag. The stag is invoked in relief on the top cover and in intaglio on the rear and covered fully in split-grain leather. Crown 8vo (246 x 150 mm), ff. 63, tipped-in is a small folio sheet (280 x 213 mm) printed of one side only "Prices of Type and Materials Manufactured and Sold by Stephen Sutton & Co. at the Caxton Letter Foundry...", later quarter red morocco, green boards. A very rare specimen of printing types from this little known foundry. The specimen begins with 34 samples of different size font from "the most modern faces, cut by artists of first-rate skill and acknowledged talent." Then follows 27 priced specimens of "a beautiful and extensive assortment of Stereotype Ornaments." The tipped-in price list is printed in double-column and gives prices for type, wood type, leads' and metal furniture, galleys, brass rule, cases, frames, and furniture. At the foot is a list of "Agents for the Country": Mr. Joseph Graham, 2 Jewry Street, Aldgate; Mr Simmons, Artillery Lane, Bishopsgate Street; Messrs. Renshaw and Kirkman, Budge Row; Messrs. Shepherd and Sutton, Foster Lane. Provenance: From the typographical library of John Lewis (his bookplate) and John Brinkley (his signature). The only other copy recorded is that of The British Library.
