‎Première édition in-12 parue la même année que l’édition in-4 illustrée. Il s’agit d’une fausse édition Elzevier imprimée à Rouen, suivant Motteley et Brunet, portant sur le titre la marque à la sphère.Poète et romancier, Jean Desmarets de Saint-Sorlin (1595-1676) entra à l’Académie française en 1634 au quatrième fauteuil. Il signe ici une épopée romanesque en vers à la gloire de la Providence divine, à l’origine de la puissance de la nation française, de la monarchie et de la religion catholique.Bel exemplaire dans une reliure parfaitement établie par Vogel.Deux tâches d’encre sur le second plat. Plusieurs restaurations de papier : dans la marge intérieure du titre ainsi qu’aux pages 49 et 207 sans atteinte au texte. Rousseurs éparses sans gravité, traces brunes laissées par le lien de soie pages 143 à 147. Déchirure sans manque page 217. ‎Quatrième édition elzévirienne du Guidon de la langue italienne , la première datant de 1641 ( Leyde ; Bonaventure et Abraham Elsevier ) . " Lhuguenot Nathanael DUËZ (1609 après 1669), originaire dAlsace, commence à étudier les langues classiques à un âge très jeune avec son père. Adolescent, il passe trois ans à Strasbourg où il perfectionne ses connaissances en latin et où il apprend lallemand. Dans les douze années qui suivent, le jeune homme voyage, en tant que maître de langues, à travers lEurope ( Italie, Angleterre, Allemagne, Paris) pour sinstaller enfin à Leyde, en 1635 (...), où il sera actif comme enseignant ditalien, de français et dallemand, comme auteur de manuels de langues et comme traducteur, jusquà la fin de sa vie. On ne connaît ni le lieu ni la date de son décès. Les uvres de Duez ont connu un succès considérable ; Loonen le qualifie même comme lun des maîtres les plus influents de lEurope du XVIIe siècle. Ils bénéficiaient du contexte socio-historique qui voyait le français en plein essor dans toute lEurope et en particulier aux Pays-Bas, où il était une langue de distinction religieuse, sociale et professionnelle, diffusée à des couches de plus en plus vastes de la population . Puisque leur rémunération pouvait varier en fonction de la loi du marché (nombre délèves, concurrence), ils trouvaient souvent un complément de revenu dans la publication douvrages pédagogiques. Duez collabora avec les Elzevier, célèbre famille de typographes-imprimeurs, chez lesquels il commença à publier ses travaux destinés surtout à un public adulte et à un marché non seulement hollandais mais international. Ses élèves étaient principalement des expatriés allemands de famille aisée qui fuyaient les horreurs de la guerre de Trente Ans ou, pour litalien, des bourgeois francophones qui commerçaient ou voyageaient en Italie, pays dont la langue navait pas perdu le prestige culturel et littéraire quil avait atteint à la Renaissance et dans lequel on assistait, dailleurs, à un vrai engouement pour le français [... ] Le Guidon est, comme beaucoup dautres manuels de langue de lépoque, une compilation de textes de nature diverse. Il rassemble une grammaire de la langue italienne rédigée en français, trois dialogues, une comédie, des « compliments italiens » et des proverbes . Ces matériaux didactiques ne sont pas tous du cru de Duez. Les trois dialogues sont empruntés à Catherin Ledoux, qui les avait insérés dans sa Schola Italica (Dulcis, 1605) . Présentés sur deux colonnes, avec le texte italien et la traduction française en regard, ils ont comme sujets : I Del salutare, levarsi, & pigliar licenza, con alcune demande (I De salüer, se leuer, & prendre congé, auec quelques demandes), II Del bere & mangiare (II Du boire & manger) et III Degli esercitii, dellí alloggiamento, e di andare al letto. (III Des exercices, du logement, & daller coucher). Ils seront reproposés tels quels par Lodewijk Meyer dans sa grammaire intitulée Italiaansche Spraakkonst (Amsterdam : Abraham Wolfgang 1672 ) [...]La Comédie de la Moresse (titre italien La Mora) est une imitation italienne de LEunuque de Térence, dont lauteur est Giovanni Battista Calderari (Vicence : Brunelli 1588) mais que Ledoux avait republiée (Dulcis 1599) et qui figure également dans la Schola Italica.Les Complimenti Italiani sont un recueil de plusieurs phrases et formules utiles dans des situations communicatives de la vie quotidiennes dont la source serait les Duelli di complimenti dAngelo Gabrieli ( Venise : Ghirardo Imberti, 1629).La Ghirlanda di varii fioretti & proverbi italiani porte la signature de lArsiccio Intronato, pseudonyme de Antonio Vignali ou Vignale (1500-1559), écrivain et poète de la Renaissance italienne. Elle est datée « Di Milano, del mese degli asini, 1600 », mais elle est antérieure puisquelle se trouvait déjà dans Alcune lettere piacevoli una dell'Arsiccio Intronato in proverbi, l'altre di M. Alessandro Marzi, Cirloso Intronato (Sienne : Bonetti 1587) et à la suite de LEunuchus de Ledoux (mais non pas dans la Schola). La grammaire proprement dite ( 84 pages dans lédition de 1659) est divisée en onze parties, selon une organisation qui suit un schéma traditionnel : 1 De la Lecture et Prononciation, 2 Des Articles & Declinaisons, 3 Des Degrez de Comparaison, 4 Du mouvement des noms, 5 De lApostrophe, 6 De lAccent, 7 Des Pronoms, 8 Des Verbes & Coniugaisons. 9 Des Aduerbes & Interjections, 10 Des Conjontions, 11 Des Prepositions.La description des parties du discours est « encore fortement inspirée par la tradition grammaticale latine, ce qui se reflète, par exemple, dans le traitement de ladjectif comme sous-classe du nom ou dans le maintien du système casuel pour la déclinaison des articles, des noms et des pronoms, ou encore, dans la conservation du mode optatif grec » (Szoc 2009 : par. 26, à qui nous renvoyons pour une analyse plus circonstanciée). Il sagit dune grammaire basée sur une approche contrastive. Pour exposer les règles de la langue italienne lauteur a souvent recours à la comparaison avec le français [...] En évaluant lensemble des matériaux sélectionnés dans le Guidon, ainsi que le paratexte, nous pouvons estimer quelle est lorientation pédagogique de Duez. "It was Louis and Daniel who broke with the family tradition by adopting the Minerva or the Sphere as their primary logo, and these were quite different in style. Louis was to adopt the figure of Minerva as his principle device (or Athena, the Greek equivalent) with an olive tree, owl and the motto Ne Extra Oleas (Nothing but the olive). He first employed this mark in 1642, and nine of their catalogues and over a third of their joint publications (256 out of 600) use the Minerva. As the goddess of arts, crafts and skill as well as wisdom and inspiration, then the change to this female figure may follow the Amsterdam ideal for greater innovation. As an intellectual man himself, Louis may have also wanted to display that in his choice of motto, and it was certainly more obscure than some. It is not a common Latin phrase and seems to have been a translation from a Greek expression. Willems states that there may be a connection to a passage in the Adages of Erasmus, where he is quoting from the Frogs of Aristophanes, but doesnt offer any documentary support for this, and seems reluctant to say definitively. The Minerva motif also appears in the Leiden University seal, so this is also creating a connection, both intellectual and from a business perspective, with the university. Catalogue of the stock of Daniel Elzevier's bookselling establishment in Amsterdam listing about 20000 titles. It is divided into seven parts: theology 176pp law 86pp medicine 60pp books on 'miscelllaneous' subjets 200pp books in French 120pp books in Italian Spanish and English 24pp and books in German 103pp. No prices were given but these were presumably quoted on request. Included are of course the books published by the Elzeviers still in print and a vast number of other books printed in Holland and the catalogue is therefore still of bibliographical value. It also served contemporary scholars as a work of reference and may be considered a select universal bibliography Breslauer & Folter # 68. This rare variant edition has the uncorrected errors in pagination, but the engraved title has the correct S.P.Q.R. Old collector's manuscript note relating to this edition is attached. Florus was a Roman historian and poet. This is his Epitome of Roman History. Florus was said to have addressed the well-known lines to Hadrian beginning, "Ego nolo Caesar esse" [I do not wish to be a Caesar], which provoked Hadrian's satirical parody, "I do not wish to be a Florus," quoted by Spartianus. This important edition was edited by the great "monarch and tyrant of literature", Claude Salmasius (1593?-1653). The Dutch family of Elzevier (Elzevir; Elsevier) were the foremost printers of their time. They produced a vast variety of well printed scholarly and popular books; many in a very small handy format.
