br. Dante e Beatrice attraversano la luna senza scompaginarla, come un raggio di luce entra nell'acqua senza turbarla. Un'immagine che diventa il modello della relazione tra individui. Certo, Dante intende riformare l'umanità degenerata e combattere gli eretici, ma nella terza cantica ci consegna un'altra verità, più nascosta e apparentemente impolitica, racchiusa in quella abbagliante epifania lunare. Attorno alla sacralità e inviolabilità dell'altro vengono convocate alcune "guide novecentesche" (Stein, Arendt, Zambrano, Levinas), capaci di ispirare un modello di conoscenza non più fondato sul dominio, ma su una passività ricettiva. La "mitezza", elogiata da Norberto Bobbio, ci ricorda che l'imperativo morale più alto non è tanto aiutare il prossimo quanto lasciarlo essere quel che è. In questa etica del rispetto - unico modo per dare realtà all'altro - sta la lezione sempre attuale di Dante, che dalla sua "distanza" giudica il nostro presente premendo su di noi con gli interrogativi più urgenti. Solo se ci accostiamo a lui come se la "Commedia" fosse stata scritta per noi, potremo ricavarne ragioni di vita.

16mo, br. ed. pp.224. Come educare oggi un giovane, immerso in una cultura che ignora l'umanesimo e i tradizionali veicoli del sapere? In che modo riformulare i dilemmi dell'etica dopo che gli dei hanno abbandonato i nostri cieli? L'"inattuale" Dante - uomo del Medioevo e abitante di un universo ancora stabile - può darci indicazioni preziose attraverso l'ausilio involontario di Simone Weil. La filosofa francese ha scritto: "È bene ciò che dà maggiore realtà agli esseri e alle cose, male ciò che gliela toglie". Alla luce di questa intuizione La Porta individua l'idea morale all'origine della "Commedia", dove i sette peccati capitali tolgono tutti realtà al prossimo. Così Dante può aiutarci a ridefinire un'etica che non consiste in imperativi categorici ma che ci permette di far esistere il mondo, nella sua inviolabile, corposa, mutevole alterità. E che ci chiede di "ascoltare" gli altri proprio al fine di farli esistere, e di far esistere così anche noi.

In this colorful portrayal of civic life in medieval Florence, Carol Lansing explores the patrilineal structure and function of these urban families, known as "magnates." She shows how they emerged as a class defined not by specific economic interests but by a distinctive culture. During the earlier period of weaker civic institutions, these families built their power by sharing among themselves crucial resources--forts, political alliances, ecclesiastical rights. Lansing examines this activity as well as the responses patrilineal strategies drew from women, who were excluded from inheritance and full lineage membership. In looking at the elements of this culture, which emphasized private military force, knighthood, and faction, Lansing argues that the magnates' tendency toward violence derived from a patrician youth culture and from the instability inherent in the exaggerated use of patrilineal ties.In describing the political changes of the 1290s, she shows how some families eventually dropped the most stringent aspects of patrilineage and exerted their influence through institutions and patronage networks.
