Nel 1966, l'anno successivo al settimo centenario della nascita di Dante Alighieri, fu rinnovato ad Arezzo il processo che il Podestà di Firenze Cante dei Gabrielli da Gubbio mosse al "divin poeta" e ad altri fiorentini con l'accusa di baratteria. Nel 1302 Dante fu condannato in contumacia al rogo, sentenza che per lui significò l'esilio. Gli atti del "nuovo" processo, pubblicati per la prima volta nel 1967 a cura del noto penalista Dante Ricci, sono qui riproposti in un'edizione anastatica che alterna ad una ricca documentazione storica ed archivistica testimonianze di celebri avvocati e giudici, assieme ad esponenti di spicco della vita politica e culturale italiana di allora.

Celebrato il 16 aprile 1966 nella Basilica di San Francesco in Arezzo. L'assolutorio verdetto di questo processo ha riparato, in parte, alle frammentarie e disarmoniche manifestazioni organizzate in occasione del centenario dantesco; ha riportato il grande pubblico davanti ai temi eterni della poesia; ha lavato l'offesa fatta all'esule fiorentino con un corale ed ecumenica riparazione. L'applauso scosciante dell'immenso pubblico rimasto nella Basilica ha sottolineato la comune soddisfazione di una riparazione di giustizia che aveva tardato per sei secoli e mezzo. L'alluvione del 4 novembre 1966 disperse in tipografia testi e composizioni e solamente nel maggio 1967 le Arti Grafiche Alinari pubblicarono l'opera che vi proponiamo.. br. Il canto dantesco ripercorre la vicenda terrena di Pier delle Vigne, mettendo in luce gli aspetti che avvicinano, fino a coincidere in una perfetta osmosi, il personaggio dantesco e Dante stesso. Il poeta s'incarna in Pier delle Vigne, usa la lingua aulica di Piero, piena di artifici e preziosismi retorici-linguistici, vive la sua stessa fedeltà e lealtà, l'uno nei confronti del suo signore, l'imperatore Federico, l'altro verso la sua città, Firenze, fino all'avvilimento della calunnia e alla conseguente morte morale e fisica, nel caso di Piero. Il suicidio, il massimo dei mali dell'umanità, viene visto qui come la conseguenza naturale di un'onta che, di per sé, non potrà essere mai cancellata. "La meretrice" che abita nei palazzi, l'invidia, è il motore che conduce al dramma esistenziale di Piero e di Dante alla fine. Nella seconda parte del canto, affrontati gli scialacquatori, la scena finale si ferma su un suicida anonimo, di cui conosciamo solo la città natale: Firenze ed è Firenze, cui ritorna sempre la mente di Dante, la protagonista dell'ultima parte del canto.
