ROSETTI DANTE GABRIEL.
Letters from Dante Gabriel Rossetti to Algernon Charles Swinburne Regarding the Attacks Made upon the Latter by Mortimer Collins and upon Both by Robert Buchanan.
Soft cover. Fine. . 8vo. Original printed wrappers stitched as issued. London: Printed for Private Circulation Only by Richard Clay and Sons Ltd. 1921. First Edition. One of 30 copies printed for Thomas J. Wise. Ashley Library IV 156. Presentation copy from Wise to John Drinkwater. For John Drinkwater from Thos. J. Wise. John Drinkwater wrote an introduction to the fourth volume of The Ashley Library: A Catalogue of Printed Books Manuscripts and Autograph Letters Collected by Thomas James Wise 1923. This was Wises greatest bibliographical achievement a complete catalogue of his books with full descriptions and collations. The first two volumes were published in 1922 and volumes 3-4 the next year. The massive and still very useful book was to run to a final total of eleven volumes. Each volume had a preface by a different luminary. . . The edition was limited to 250 copies of which 50 were on special paper. This was a short enough limitation to cause quite a scramble for copies and it was the clat associated with this book that finally set the seal on Wises reputation as the bibliographical authority. Viewed with hindsight some of the prefaces read rather oddly none more so than John Drinkwaters. John Collins The Two Forgers. A Biography of Harry Buxton Forman & Thomas James Wise page 217. Upper corner of front cover creased o/w Fine. Enclosed in blue folding slipcase gilt letters on spine. With John Drinkwaters bookplate. An interesting association copy.

paperback

Rossetti Dante Gabriel
After the French Liberation of Italy proof
London 1869. Very Good. Rare. This is a single leaf with the poem dated "D.G.R. 1859" below the text. The sonnet was printed as part of the proof process for Rossetti's Poems published in April 1870. Rossetti decided not to include the poem after all because of its erotic nature and reference to prostitution. Thus the poem was written in 1859 but not published until 1904 many years after Rossetti's death. William Michael Rossetti in his Bibliography of Dante Gabriel Rossetti 1904 considers this as a separate item of importance. There are only four copies in Worldcat Lilly Princeton Texas and Huntington. Two tiny chips on right side of page else in very good condition. Although there is no evidence with this item of its provenance it is supposedly from the collection of William E. Fredeman the Pre-Raphaelite bibliographer and collector. PRERAPH/120114. unknown

Rossetti Dante Gabriel
Autograph Manuscript of Place de la Bastille Paris
1881. Very Good. A very nice handwritten copy of this fine early poem by Rossetti. He wrote the sonnet on his trip to the continent with Holman Hunt in the autumn of 1849. This manuscript is undated but it is possibly a draft of the final poem. It uses wording which was changed in the final version of the poem as published in Ballads and Sonnets in 1881 and the Collected Works in 1887. In the published collections Rossetti writes in line twelve."was blown abroad on gospel-tongues of flame." In this handwritten copy he writes "was blown abroad upon swift tongues of flame." It is known that Rossetti often wrote out slightly differing versions of his sonnets. Written on one side of a 4 3/4 x 7 1/8 piece of paper torn from a larger sheet which has an embossed stamp at lower left edge that reads "best quality." Mounted on sheet of archival paper and protected by acetate. In very good condition. AUTO/102814. unknown

London: Ellis and White 1881. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. AN EXCEPTIONAL ASSOCIATION COPY. Inscribed by Dante Gabriel Rossetti: "To Frederick Leyland from his friend D.G. Rossetti 1881." Rossetti died the following year. Leyland was Rossetti's most important late patron. Frederick Leyland 1832-1892 was a Liverpool shipping magnate and major art collector. Other well-known works commissioned by Leyland were "The Beguiling of Merlin" by Edward Burne-Jones and Whistler's Peacock Room which was installed in his London house The Peacock Room may now be seen at the Freer Art Gallery. The Arthur A Houghton copy with his bookplate on rear paste-down. The text is here printed as it first appeared in the February 1850 issue of The Germ with neatly printed below the variants present in the 1856 Oxford and Cambridge Magazine the 1870 Poems and the 1886 Collected Works. Bishop notes the decorative similarities between this edition and that of Hacon & Ricketts in 1900 including the "same alternating black and red Ricketts initials and text the same red rules as the two-page openings of the book following the half-titles and the same red Roman numerals of each stanza" although Mosher here opts for smaller type a larger page and different dingbats with his printer's device prominently displayed on the title-leaf verso. The Blessed Damozel is perhaps the best known poem by Dante Gabriel Rossetti as well as the title of some of his best known paintings. The poem was first published in 1850 in the Pre-Raphaelite journal The Germ. Rossetti subsequently revised the poem twice and republished it in 1856 1870 and 1873. The poem was partially inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's poem The Raven with its depiction of a lover grieving on Earth over the death of his loved one. Rossetti chose to represent the situation in reverse. The poem describes the damozel observing her lover from heaven and her unfulfilled yearning for their reunion in heaven. The poem also was the inspiration for Claude Debussy's La Damoiselle lue 1888 a cantata for two soloists female choir and orchestra. Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti 1828-1882 generally known as Dante Gabriel Rossetti was a British poet illustrator painter and translator and a member of the Rossetti family. He founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848 with William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais. Rossetti was later to be the main inspiration for a second generation of artists and writers influenced by the movement most notably William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones. His work also influenced the European Symbolists and was a major precursor of the Aesthetic movement. Rossetti's art was characterized by its sensuality and its medieval revivalism. His early poetry was influenced by John Keats. His later poetry was characterized by the complex interlinking of thought and feeling especially in his sonnet sequence The House of Life. Poetry and image are closely entwined in Rossetti's work. He frequently wrote sonnets to accompany his pictures spanning from The Girlhood of Mary Virgin 1849 and Astarte Syriaca 1877 while also creating art to illustrate poems such as Goblin Market by the celebrated poet Christina Rossetti his sister. Rossetti's personal life was closely linked to his work especially his relationships with his models and muses Elizabeth Siddal Fanny Cornforth and Jane Morris. A spectacular example of an unusual printing method from an American press. Hatch Mosher 184; Bishop Mosher 47.

Portland, Maine: Thomas B. Mosher, 1901 hardcover
