Original scarlet cloth 83 pp. with Art Nouveau floral motifs in blind on the upper cover. Frontispiece "The Blessed Damozel" after the painting by Rossetti. POEMS
London: F.S. Ellis 1870. Dark blue-green cloth elaborately decorated in gilt decorated endsheets edges untrimmed.Binding lightly rubbed clean 4.5cm tear to gutter of half-title at top old bookseller's description tipped to first leaf of terminal ads otherwise a very good bright copy. Half morocco slipcase. First edition of Rossetti's first published collection of original poems preceded by two private printings in 1869 and 1870. Early binding state before the spine block was recut with an unsigned signature of 8 blank leaves at the back after two leaves of publisher's adverts. The floral endsheets are printed on cream paper. Inscribed by the author on the half-title page: "To Theodore Martin Esq with DG Rossetti's friendly regards April 1870." Theodore Martin 1816- 1909 English poet biographer translator of Dante and the husband of the actress Helen Faucit was among those in the list Rossetti sent to his publisher to receive presentation copies of this book. Stetz and Lasner in ENGLAND IN THE 1880s note: "This book by the circumstances of its publication by its contents and by its design secured Rossetti's reputation. When his wife Elizabeth Sidal Rossetti died in February 1862 Rossetti placed the original manuscripts of his poems in her coffin. In 1869 these were exhumed secretly from her grave and published in this volume in 1870 with other more recent work. The book opens with 'The Blessed Damozel' Rossetti's most famous poem which had first appeared in the Pre-Raphaelite magazine THE GERM in 1850; among the other contents are the sonnet sequence called 'The House of Life' and a group of poems about paintings that show Rossetti's abiding interest in unifying the sister arts. . . . POEMS 1870 was perhaps most remarkable for being one of the first books to be designed throughout by an author. Over a period of nine months Rossetti supervised the printing of the proofs while painstakingly designing the covers and endsheets. The result had a great influence upon writers and designers of the 1880s. Oscar Wilde's POEMS 1881 and several of Walter Pater's books clearly were modeled upon Rossetti's unique volume." THE POETICAL WORKS OF DANTE GABRIEL ROSSETTI
London: Ellis and Elvey 1895. Beautifully bound in 3/4 leather over cloth. An octavo of 380 pages with a preface writtend by the author's brother William Michael Rossetti. The binding signed by Hatchards of Piccadilly has a very strong Arts and Crafts influence in both the font and placement of the gilt spine title as well as broad flat bands separating the spine panels. Top edge gilt. The leather has uniformly faded from an olive green to a warm butterscotch tan. The evidence of fading is so slight that it is likely to go unnoticed by most observers. An exquisite binding and a most satisfying addition to a collection of literature relating to the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. hardcover books

ROSSETTI Dante Gabriel 1828 1882.
The Poems of Dante Gabriel Rossetti. 2 volumes.
New York:: Brentano's 1909. 1909. 2 volumes. Large 8vo. vi 245 3; xiv 246 2 pp. Portrait frontis. photograph by Mr. F.H. Day of a drawing of the author red title vignette. Original half green morocco green marbled boards gilt-decorated spine raised bands top edge gilt bound for Brentano's; spine faded. Near fine. Cheyne Walk edition see half-title printed at University Press Cambridge. This is a complete collected edition of Rossetti's poems. It has been corrected over the standard edition edited by William Michael Rossetti 1886. Rossetti poet illustrator painter translator was extremely influential and he founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848. He suffered greatly towards the end of his life finally ending as the result of Bright's kidney disease. "It would be difficult to imagine later nineteenth-century Victorian poetry and art without Rossetti's influence. His writings can perhaps best be viewed as an unusually acute expression of Victorian social uncertainty and loss of faith. Rossetti's poetry on the absence of love is as bleakly despairing as any of the century and no poet of his period conveyed more profoundly certain central Victorian anxieties: metaphysical uncertainty sexual anxiety and fear of time." – Poetry Foundation web-source. The poem was first published in 1850 in the Pre-Raphaelite journal The Germ. Rossetti subsequently revised the poem twice and republished it in 1856 1870 and 1873.

The poem was partially inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's poem The Raven with its depiction of a lover grieving on Earth over the death of his loved one. Rossetti chose to represent the situation in reverse. The poem describes the damozel observing her lover from heaven and her unfulfilled yearning for their reunion in heaven.

The poem also was the inspiration for Claude Debussy's La Damoiselle élue 1888 a cantata for two soloists female choir and orchestra.

Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti 1828-1882 generally known as Dante Gabriel Rossetti was a British poet illustrator painter and translator and a member of the Rossetti family. He founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848 with William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais. Rossetti was later to be the main inspiration for a second generation of artists and writers influenced by the movement most notably William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones. His work also influenced the European Symbolists and was a major precursor of the Aesthetic movement. Rossetti's art was characterized by its sensuality and its medieval revivalism. His early poetry was influenced by John Keats. His later poetry was characterized by the complex interlinking of thought and feeling especially in his sonnet sequence The House of Life. Poetry and image are closely entwined in Rossetti's work. He frequently wrote sonnets to accompany his pictures spanning from The Girlhood of Mary Virgin 1849 and Astarte Syriaca 1877 while also creating art to illustrate poems such as Goblin Market by the celebrated poet Christina Rossetti his sister. Rossetti's personal life was closely linked to his work especially his relationships with his models and muses Elizabeth Siddal Fanny Cornforth and Jane Morris.

A spectacular example of an unusual printing method from an American press.

Hatch Mosher 184; Bishop Mosher 47.
