br. Circa trent'anni fa nel 1991 usciva la prima versione italiana de 'Il libro della Scala', tratta da una versione latina medievale di un perduto originale arabo. Si trattava di un testo sul 'mi'r?j' o ascensione celeste di Maometto ben noto almeno dagli anni '20, essendo stato discusso in un'opera pionieristica di 'Miguel Asín Palacios' dall'eloquente titolo 'La escatologia musulmana en la Divina Comedia' uscita nel 1919. Quarant'anni più tardi nel 1949 uscivano quasi contemporaneamente due notevoli studi di Enrico Cerulli e José Muñoz Sendino che ne riprendevano e ne discutevano - giungendo a opposte conclusioni - gli assunti fondamentali. Carlo Ossola nel 1994 avrebbe curato la prima traduzione italiana della ricerca dell'Asín Palacios ponendo termine all'incredibile ritardo del mondo accademico italiano nel prendere atto della 'svolta' che l'Asín aveva impresso a questo tipo di ricerche. A prescindere infatti dalla bontà delle sue assai controverse conclusioni, che divisero il mondo accademico italiano e europeo, l'opera dell'Asín Palacios segna davvero una svolta negli studi dantistici.

La teoresi dantesca del tradurre non si esaurisce nelle esigue e frequentatissime considerazioni speculative contenute nel «De vulgari eloquentia» e nel «Convivio», ma si declina attraverso vari exempla di resa sparsi soprattutto nei due trattati e nella «Commedia». Alle luce di un ampio percorso storico-critico e attraverso l'analisi di un composito costrutto di rimandi intertestuali, Vincenzo Salerno ricostruisce il rapporto dialogico e dialettico fra pratica traduttiva e tradizione letteraria nella produzione di Dante, mostrando che il transmutare dantesco rinvia sia all'indiscussa esemplarità dei modelli filosofico-letterari della classicità greco-latina, sia agli scritti - sacri e di commento - della tradizione cristiana. Una lettura inedita di Dante, in cui il discorso traduttologico cede volentieri il passo alla storia della critica e al metodo comparativo.
