Vellum is translucent and an old certificate wastesheet can be seen through it. Rubbing light soiling and foxing to boards. A few small losses to title label on spine but title remains intact. Original paper wrappers are bound in with a repair to a closed tear on the inside of the front wrapper. Foxing to wrappers and to first and last pages else clean and bright. 539 pages plus index. Vellum. 153 xv pp. Small octavo 6.5" x 4 With title page vignette of Noah's Ark another printer's mark on verso of the last page plus 8 large woodcuts and 3 smaller text cuts. Full period vellum with later handwritten title and date to the spine. Italic and Roman type the first introduction of spelling reforms showing the pronunciation of Florentine at the time. This is a very curious and interesting first edition of Giambullari's analysis of Dante's inferno with special attention paid to the location of Dante's Hell and illustrated with fascinating woodcuts. The first shows a map with Jerusalem at the top Purgatory at the bottom the Levant on the east and Europe and Terra Incognita i.e. the Americas in the West. Another world map is a polar projection showing the various portions of the world surrounded by Limbo. Condition is very good. Vellum covers have normal age and wear title page has old Italian owner name in brown ink occasional spotting and foxing to text a very few light pencil marginalia otherwise very good. USTC 832684. Pier Francesco Giambullari 1495 1555 was a scholar versed in Latin Greek and Hebrew a priest a Florentine and a humanist. As a young man he was secretary to Lorenzo de Medici's mother and after he took holy orders he became the priest at the Medici's church -- in fact the book is dedicated to Lorenzo. He was a founding member of the Accademia Fiorentina and became known as its leading authority on Dante as well as one of the clearest prose writers in Italian/Florentine of the age. The eight large woodcuts in the book depict the structure position and dimensions of Dante's Hell for which he apparently used Sebastian Munsters "Geography" in determining Hells exact position on the earth.
