First Edition of this French Prose Translation by Julien Jacques Moutonnet De Clairfons 1740-1813 of the Inferno apparently only the second published translation into French of any part of the Divine Comedy after the publication of the verse translation of the entire work by Balthazard Grangier in 1596-97. Moutonnet De Clairfons completed but never published a French translation of the Paradiso. NUC cites only two copies in North American institutions DLC NIC Brunet III 513. Binding: Original crimson half morocco with marbled boards. <br>Spine is decorated with dense gilt and in six compartments. Marbled pasted and free end papers. Edges marbled to match boards. <br> Notes: Ex Libris George Faudel Phillips Sheriff of London and Middlesex in 1884/5 High Sheriff of the County of London in 1895/6 and Lord Mayor of London in 1896/7 . Born George Phillips he had assumed the additional surname of Faudel which was that of his maternal uncle. His father Sir Benjamin Samuel Phillips had been Lord Mayor of London between 1865 and 1866. The title became extinct on the death of the third Baronet in 1941. Folio 36 x 29 cm. Limited edition copy 1193 of 1321 signed by the illuminator Nestore Leoni and the illustrator Vittorio Grassi to commemorate the sixth centenary of Dante's death. This is a perfect facsimile of the original parchment manuscript French leaved and printed on vellum in two or more colors with thirty-nine full or compressed illustrations plus illuminated head and tail pieces on each page. The paper made in the mills of Pietro Miliani in Fabriano. Laid-in a four page announcement of this publication in English headlined -- "An Offering To His Holiness Pope Pius XI A Manuscript On Vellum Of the Vita Nuova." This too lettered in black and red noting the publishing Executive Committee and providing critical commentary from religious and literary notables. Interior text in Italian.
