Magnini F. Rizzi B. Crivelli and others after F. Fontebasso G. Zompini G. Schiavoni and G. F. Marcazzi including frontis portraits unnumbered plates map of Hell and the folding genealogy. Volume I with a small tear in the margin of ccxxvi-ii. Volume II mispaginated at xxi as xx light stain to plate iv and very small loss to the bottom corner of cccxliii. Volume III with light spotting to page introducing Canto I with light foxing at the end. Volume IV mispaginated at p.50 as 80-81 for 50-51 and again at pgs. 54-55. Volume IV-part II with light staining at the prelims and mispaginated at xiii as 277. Bound in full calf leather with diamond pattern stamped boards thick gilt border to front board and rear sun motif devices in gilt to spine compartments and Dante stamped in gilt right on the leather on one compartment and the volume number on another. Marbled endpapers and text block edges and engraved bookplate of Lord Lilford with Anti Room Lilford label below. Each volume very clean throughout. The exterior hinges of volume II and IV are starting front board of volume II almost off volume IV front board still firmly attached. With light wear to the leather at the edges of each with scuffing and scarring to the spines and chipping to the spine of volume V. Overall a good and very clean set with minimal spotting throughout. An important collected edition of Dante's works that had a very strong subscriber base and is accompanied by commentary of some of the best Dante scholars of the time. The Zatta edition also featured new engravings for The Divine Comedy since the late sixteenth century. The first three volumes comprise The Divine Comedy the last volume in two parts collects; Vita Nuova Convito Volgare Eloquenza Sette Salmi Penitenziali and De Monarchia. Antonio Zatta unknown

The fourth volume contains a separate page 'Canzoni e Sonetti di Dante Alighieri' and are a collection of his songs and sonnets which includes a dissertation on Dante's Divine Comedy by Mr. Merian a scholar and teacher at the Academy of Berlin. The three volumes of Zotti's Comedia are dedicated to an English lady Havely Nick. Apenas a los nueve anos se completa el sindrome del precoz caballero al encontrarse delante de la que seria la encarnacion de todos los nobles ideales empezando por el Amor que asi dicho en mayUscula representaba para los sensibles poetas de aquellos tiempos Ia razon primera y ultima de la vida una especie de religion personal basada en Ia adoracion de la dama. Sucedio que en una fiesta via a 10 lejos a un pequeno angel de ojos verdes que era una nifia tarnbien de nueve afios llamada Beatrice Portinari a quien llamaban Bice. A partir de esa revelacion Dante comienza a versificar pero fue hasta los dieciocho alios cuando publica su primer soneto con tanto exito que desde entonces se Ie conside- r6 importante en las letras florentinas; de ahi en adelante no cesa su produccion literaria publica importantes obras poeticas como la Vita Nuova y E1 cotwivio obra filosofico- politica: De Monarchia y su tratado filologico: De Vu1gari E1oquentia. Written in the fourteenth century by Italian poet and philosopher Dante Alighieri The Divine Comedy is arguably the greatest epic poem of all time - presenting Dante�s brilliant vision of the three realms of Christian afterlife: Inferno Purgatory and Paradise. The Divine Comedy circulated in manuscript copies for a century-and-a-half after its composition in the early fourteenth century. First printed in 1372 in three Italian centers: Foligno Mantua and Jesi. The first English translation came in 1802 by Henry Boyd. Dante born in 1265 completed the majority of the three sections in his last six years finally completing the Paradiso shortly before his passing in 1321. The first part of Dante's Divine Comedy the "Inferno" or "Hell" begins on the night before Good Friday in the year 1300 "halfway along our life's path". Dante is thirty-five years old half of the biblical life expectancy of 70 lost in a dark wood assailed by beasts he cannot evade and unable to find the straight way to salvation. Conscious that he is ruining himself and that he is falling into a deep place where the sun is silent Dante is at last rescued by Virgil and the two of them begin their journey to the underworld. Each sin's punishment in the Inferno is a contrapasso a symbolic instance of poetic justice. In this second and perhaps most imaginative part of his masterwork Dante struggles up the terraces of Mount Purgatory still guided by Virgil in a continuation of his difficult ascent to purity. In "Paradise" having plunged to the uttermost depths of Hell and climbed the Mount of Purgatory Dante ascends to Heaven continuing his soul's search for God guided by his beloved Beatrice. As he progresses through the spheres of Paradise he grows in understanding until he finally experiences divine love in the radiant presence of the deity.
