8vo., First Edition, with a frontispiece (original tissue guard present, 9 plates on 7, and 5 maps (4 full-page) in the text, neat contemporary signatures on front free endpaper, free endpapers lightly browned, half-title lightly spotted' original blue cloth, upper board with gilt frame border, gilt back, gilt top, uncut, backstrip lightly chafed (without material loss) at head and tail else a very good, bright, firm copy. The frontispiece reproduces the famous photograph of the first Archaeopteryx fossil found at Eichstadt and now in the BMNH. Nice copy of the first appearance of this classic treatise, one of the most important studies of the immediate post-Darwinian period. McCabe began his career as a Catholic priest, but his faith was diluted by a rebellious intellect and he spent the greater part of his long life as a rationalist author and lecturer, and leading light of the English Athiesm movement. The first edition is scarce, especially in this condition.

In reading her story we learn of a hard cruel world where even 'survival' was still a luxury and of the courage necessary for the nurses to look after these still relatively primitive people in very isolated places. Here tragic death in a plane crash in 1972 drew attention to the vitally needed improvements in communications and facilities for these dedicated nurses. The facts of her death, and the controversy that surrounded Hartwell's action when he decided to use her body for nourishment, drew the world's attention to the risks these nurses took everyday in the wastes of the Arctic. Over one inch thick. "The first major sawmill in British Columbia was the Port Alberni Anderson mill of 1860/1864, which was closed because it ran out of logs. Manager Gilbert Sproat advised the owners that to get logs to the mill they would need to build a railway. The owners refused so the mill was closed. It was to be almost fifty years until the first logging railway was built in 1912. The last train of logs was delivered to MacMillan Bloedel's Franklin River Camp A in 1957. In the intervening period more than thirty locomotives operated on hundreds of miles of railway grade in the area. Thousands of men were involved in a large number of logging camps, big and small.
