Legacy of Light: 205 Polaroid Photographs by 58 Distinguished American Photographers / Presentation-Association
New York: Knopf 1987 New York: Alfred A. Knopf 1987. First Edition. Fine in fine jacket. Edited by Constance Sullivan. Introduction by Peter Schjeldahl. Essays by Gretel Ehrlich Robert Stone Richard Howard and Diane Johnson. Illustrated from photographs throughout many in color. Signed by one of the essayists Robert Stone and inscribed to noted collector Arthur W. Stone. Folio size rather massive. 255 pp. Brown cloth spine lettered in gilt pictorial jacket. Fine in fine jacket. See scans. Note: White-ish patch at top left of cover scan is caused by uneven reflectivity of the mylar jacket; it is not on the dust jacket. Though nowhere so noted from the library of Arthur W. Stone. A rather unique event in photographic publishing Legacy of Light is a testament to the Polaroid camera: 205 striking photographs of which 105 are in full color by 58 photographers - and they don't look like any polaroid shots I ever took. Editor Constance Sullivan assembled the aggregation after reviewing hundreds of polaroids from public and private collections. The text include Schjeldahl's intro to the topic "The Instant Age" followed by four trenchant essays dealing with topical sections of the book: "Landscape" Greta Ehrlich; "Portrait" Robert Stone; "The Nude" Richard Howard; and "Object and Form" Diane Johnson. A large beautiful and meaningful work this copy signed and inscribed by essayist Stone and presented to noted collector A. W. Stone no relation. Robert Stone also authored Children of Light A Flag for Sunrise A Hall of Mirrors and Dog Soldiers which won the National Book Award. See scans. Lg7 Knopf hardcover

DUST JACKET: Repaired; Lightly Creased; Moderately Chipped; In Archival Quality Jacket Cover. ALSO KNOWN AS: The Conscription Crisis 1942 was originally published as La Crise de la conscription 1942 copyright Editions du Jour 1962. The original selections from Le Devoir are copyright the estate of Andre Laurendeau. The selections from Le Magazine Maclean have been collected in the volume Ces choses qui nous arrivent copyright Editions H.M.H. Ltee 1970. INTRODUCTION BY: Claude Ryan. JACKET DESIGN BY: Robert Burgess Garbutt. CONTENTS: Introduction: Andre Laurendeau by Claude Ryan; Editor's Note; The Conscription Crisis 1942; from Le Devoir; from Le Magazine Maclean; Index. SYNOPSIS: Andre Laurendeau was best known in English Canada as the co-chairman of the Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism. In French Canada he was best known as the outstanding journalist of his generation. A committed Quebec nationalist he contributed mainly to L'Action Nationale to Le Devoir where he became editor-in-chief and to Le Magazine Maclean. Witness for Quebec is a selection of some of Andre Laurendeau's most important works presented in English for the first time. It opens with a complete translation of his short book The Conscription Crisis 1942 in which Laurendeau describes in a personal and compelling way that excruciating period in Quebec-Canada relations. The second section of the book is made up of articles written for Le Devoir and the third section contains pieces from Le Magazine Maclean. These essays written over the twenty post-war years include an unusual series describing Laurendeau's feelings as a Quebecker visiting western Canada and a startlingly prescient long review of Pierre Trudeau's first book. Witness for Quebec is an essential book for anyone with an interest in Quebec; the charm and personal appeal of Andre Laurendeau's writing admirably preserved in Philip Stratford's translation makes it a stimulating book for any reader. Philip Stratford is Professor of English at the University of Montreal. His most recent publication is The Portable Graham Greene which he edited. Claude Ryan who has contributed the introduction was a long-time friend and colleague of Andre Laurendeau. He is the publisher of Le Devoir. Hard Cover. Good/Good. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Ex-Library. The Macmillan Company of Canada Hardcover

With the Napoleonic Wars at their most complexthe route of this Grand Tour was to be argely seaborne. After leaving Falmouth in Cornwall with his entourage - including his best friendpageboyvalet and eight portmanteaux for his costumes - Byron arrived in Lisbon to find it occupied by Portugal's allies the British Army. His amorous adventures started with his landlady in Seville and continued with an admiral's daughter in Cadiz: 'AhVice! How soft are thy voluptuous ways!' Leaving the horrors of a sweltering and garrisoned Gibraltar behind he set sail for Sardinia and Sicily before arriving in Malta. He soon found himself recruited by British Intelligence by dayand by his 'new Calypso'the fabulous Constance Spencer-Smithby night.Byron's mission as a British agent was to pacify the notorious local tyrant Ali Pasha in the aftermath of British duplicity against the Ottomans and intrigue against France. On the way he tried his hand at privateering and started his first epic'Childe Harold's Pilgrimage'. Byron's emotional awareness of Hellenic lore and civilisation awakened as he travelled through the Ottoman province of Greeceand developed into political awareness as he journeyed to Constantinople and the heart of the Ottoman Empire. He returned to Greece for two seasons of exploratory decadence and untrammeled debauchery and would return to Greece againdying for the cause of Greek independence fourteen years later. Lord Byron's Grand Tour is recorded as impressions in his own letters and journals more methodically in the diary of his travelling companion John Cam Hobhouseand reflected poetically in the first two cantos of the epic poem that was to make his fame and start his legend. Ian Strathcarron's re-Tour follows in Byron's footstepsrevisiting the places the poet visited two hundred years ago and comparing what he found then to what one finds there now.At each point the re-Tour meets today's equivalents to the kings consulsgovernorschieftains and gangsters that the Grand Tour met before it.Witty and perceptivethe re-Tour reveals much about Lord Byron and much too about how the world has changed in two centuries.
