Edges and corners have wear and occasional chipping there is occasional small loss to paper surfaces different qualities of paper used in the magazine have different degrees of tanning and some exterior surfaces are soiled.; The Philistine: A Periodical of Protest was a pioneering "little magazine" that was the next step up from "pamphleting" in the United States. Co-founded by Elbert Hubbard of Roycroft The Philistine was a vehicle for his thoughts rants repackaged thoughts of others and advertising that made it one of Roycroft's few self-sustaining periodicals. The Philistine published essays and other small works by various authors but most content was stated as being written by Fra Elbertus Elbert Hubbard. It's clear that staff writers wrote the majority of advertising copy that stressed the value of cars furs olives rubber tile and razor blades socks and soap typewriters tonics and tooth powders. Roycroft-produced goods were heavily promoted and one could order leather and metal goods plus furniture from their shops. Roycroft books were always advertised including some that later scholarship determined were never produced as stated. The magazine was economical to produce and simple to the point of being crude. Butcher paper covers were printed in black and red with an occasional green capital and interior text was in black with the occasional leading capital in red. Other than the advertisements there were no illustrations accompanying the text. The back covers however were an opportunity for Roycroft's best illustrators to create caricatures that lampooned the government the military organized religion social movements and the various follies of our society. Known figures in the Roycroft community were subjects of more gentle humor in these caricatures. This lot of The Philistine is 78 copies. Back covers typically have "Roycroft mottos" or aphorisms framed in Kelmscott style. A very occasional back cover advertisement. Dates of publication are generally 1898 through 1914. No volume year is a complete run of that year. These 6" tall chapbooks have string sewn binding that is holding well but are in a condition typical for this ephemeral 10-cent little magazine that was not intended to last. Chapitres : Notions générales, Organisation politique et administrative, Transports et communications, Finances, Agriculture, Industrie et minerais, Commerce extérieure et une "partie spéciale" sur les Échanges belgo-brésiliens qui fait ressortir le schéma commercial du Brésil, fort exportateur de matières premières et importateur de biens industriels (à l'époque beaucoup de pièces de chemins de fer et d'infrastructures électriques). Plats cartonnés très légèrement fendus, rousseurs éparses. Seule et unique édition de ce livre désormais quasi introuvable. Son auteur, Hugo Gouthier de Oliveira Gondim (1909-1992), a été ambassadeur du Brésil en Italie. Il y a acquis le Palazzo Pamphili, à Rome, pour la modique somme d'un million de dollars. Le lieu héberge aujourd'hui l'ambassade brésilienne dans le pays. Lors du coup d'État militaire de 1964, il a été le premier diplomate "cancel" par le nouveau pouvoir ! Francophone et francophile, il a tenu à contribuer aux échanges entre Brésil et ancêtre de l'actuel Bénélux, la Belgique en particulier, avec cet ouvrage de belle valeur documentaire. "En publiant le présent travail, je me suis surtout proposé d'abord de donner aux exportateurs et industriels belges une idée aussi exacte que possible de l'évolution économique de mon pays ; ensuite, de mettre sous les yeux des exportateurs belges et brésiliens des indications objectives et précises sur les tendances révélées à l'heure actuelle par les marchés belges et brésiliens, en matière d'échanges commerciaux ; enfin, je me suis attaché à faire ressortir les perspectives d'un plus grand développement d'affaires entre les deux pays." Volume one with the spine intentionally blackened - most curious. With a cypher (E.H.F.) bookplate printed on the same yellow paper as that used in the bindings. Hardbound. FIRST EDITION. James Henry Leigh Hunt (1784-1859) was a famous English poet, critic, and journalist. He was a friend of the most eminent literary men of his time, and his home was the gathering place for such notable writers as Hazlitt, Lamb, Keats, and Shelley. With his brother John, Hunt established in 1808 the Examiner, a liberal weekly to which he contributed political articles. Because of an outspoken article casting aspersions on the prince regent, the brothers were imprisoned from 1813 to 1815, but they continued to edit the journal from jail. In 1822, Hunt joined Shelley and Byron in Italy and launched the Liberal (1822-23), which proved a failure. During other periods Hunt contributed to the Indicator (1819-21), the Tatler (1830-32), and Leigh Hunt's London Journal (1834-35). A noted dramatic and literary critic, he was one of the first to praise the genius of Shelley and Keats.
