Pope went on to challenge the Motorcycle Land Speed Record at Bonneville post-war on a Brough Superior. This ended in a crash from which Pope was fortunate to escape. The story is told here in a very readable account. The opening line states that as an "inky schoolboy" he watched through the school railings T.E. Lawrence ride past on his Brough Superior.
