In the uncommon binding of high decorative black Papier-Mach� boards with blind embossed morocco leather backed spine. 21 pages in early chromolithographic illuminated printing. Gutta percha binding perished as usual with leaves loose but complete inside the decorative boards. Marbled paper endsheets; all edges gilt. Turn-ins gilt. Superficial chipping to leather spine at ends. Boards well preserved with just a few tiny chips to edges and some expected superficial surface cracks. The chromo printed pages have suffered damp exposure with damp lines and light damp toning evident throughout. An inexpert effort at repair at the front hinge with the front marbled endpage glued in the hinge to the pastedown. Prior ownership in manuscript at front. Distinguished by the well preserved condition of the Papier-Mach� binding and stable and neat leather spine but qualified by the stains to the complete set of pages. G only thus. . Elaborate arabesque pattern with floral designs stamped in gilt blue and red on front cover back cover ruled in blue with gilt arabesque ornament in center. Small folio. 27 leaves printed on heavy card stock including title-page in gilt and colors printed on one side only; four introductory leaves printed in Black Letter in red and black on both sides and 24 leaves of facsimiles from the Hours of Anne of Brittany printed on one side only. All edges gilt. Spine covering worn away exposing ecru cloth board. Covers toned and a bit worn. Contemporary donor's inscription to one Louise Hayter on first page of text. The former owner has neatly written in birth and death dates and major happenings throughout the calendar. Although we do not know her exact identity she seems to be a member of the family of Sir George Hayter 1792-1871 the painter and engraver. A good and interesting copy. Noel Humphreys 1810-1879 master of Victorian illumination produced several of these calendars in the 1840s reproducing portions of various French manuscripts. All are scarce and because of the fragility of the binding many copies have been rebound.OCLC lists the present one in nine locations six in North America Bridgeport Public LibraryConnecticut College Delaware Harvard Johns Hopkins and the Free Library of Philadelphia.
