‎G. Lenotre est le pseudonyme de l' historien et journaliste Théodore Gosselin (1855 - 1935) ,spécialiste de lhistoire de la Révolution française. Il écrivit en 1910, ces légendes de Noël, pour ses petites filles, Geneviève et Thérèse ." Le recueil de nouvelles, tantôt intitulé « légendes de Noël », tantôt « légendes historiques », constitue une uvre à part dans sa bibliographie. Tous ces récits, dont lhistorien affirmait quils étaient, du moins dans leurs grandes lignes, rigoureusement vrais, avaient en commun de se dérouler aux entours immédiats du 25 décembre, car cette date magique, en tous temps, avait eu de curieux pouvoirs sur les curs humains. Ils avaient aussi en commun de se dérouler sous la Terreur, en pleines guerres de lEmpire, ou à laube de la Restauration, quand les passions politiques déchaînées ninclinaient point à beaucoup dindulgence envers ladversaire. Sauf en certaines occasions, comme le démontraient ces nouvelles. On y croise un émigré qui, pour apporter un cadeau à sa fillette restée en France brave follement le peloton dexécution (La Poupée) ; une patrouille bleue dans la forêt bretonne qui sattendrit à limproviste sur le sort dun prisonnier (Noël chouan) ; deux petites filles dont les larmes désarment linsensible président du Tribunal révolutionnaire (Le Noël de Fouquier-Tinville) ; un proscrit qui dégringole dans les souliers dune jeune fille solitaire (Tombé du ciel) ; un petit Savoyard dévoué (Mathiote) ; une enchanteresse qui ressemble à la duchesse de Berry (La Fée) ; un bébé qui sauve la vie de sa mère (Un réveillon chez Paul de Kock) ; mais aussi des récits plus légers, tels La carrière de M. Colleret, ou Larbre de Noël de M. dAuvrigny, innocente vengeance dun aristocrate contre ses persécuteurs.Tous ces textes, et les autres, sont charmants, touchants, dune impeccable rigueur historique, dun style parfait. Tel vieux serviteur du Second Empire relate le merveilleux Noël que vécut un garçonnet, soixante-dix ans plus tôt : Napoléon Ier en personne lavait pris sur son cheval et ensemble ils avaient passé en revue sa Grande Armée. Et encore ceci : lécrivain Paul de Kock raconte à Ravel et Monnier lhistoire dun nourrisson qui sut attendrir le terrible Fouquier-Tinville et obtenir la grâce pour sa mère. Cet enfant, cétait lui !
