Longman & Co. London 1847 Victorian Gothic style papIer mache publisher's binding. Parables is Humphreys� first printed illuminated book in a papier-m�ch� binding.Black 4to. Gilt edges. 32pp col pages chromos minor foxing .Each of the four corners has a wreath containing the head of an angel a lion an eagle or an ox representing Gospel authors Matthew Mark John and Luke. Stylized oak leaves occupy the top and bottom central rectangles. The central figure is a sower within a wreath around which two ribbons are wrapped on a staff. �Scripture Parables� appears on the ribbons in raised Gothic letters. The only other copy I have had was respined. The original plain lettered spine is present and there is no damage to the boards. Probably as good an example you could find.Referenced in a chapter and a section of Ruari McLean's "Victorian book design and colour Printing" Univesity of California 1972 this is a landmark book in two respects. Firstly the illustrator/author Henry Noel Humphreys to which McLean dedicates a chapter in his book. This work is the first of three such works publisher by Humphreys in 1847. Secondly for the binding "the black papier mache bindings supreme examples of Victorian Gothic and perhaps the most successful of all the ingenuities of Victorian commercial bookbinding" Longman & Co., London, 1847 hardcover
