A French writer Pluche 1688-1761 was a classical professor at Reims before taking Holy Orders and becoming director of the college at Clarement. His opinions forced him to leave the college and he settled in France where he made his reputation with his popular work "Spectacle de al Nature" 1732 in nine volumes. It was translated into 9 languages and was popular in England. The present work was first issued in 1735. This Catholic apologist offers a extended discussion of Newtonianism and the conformity of modern science to the teachings of Genesis. "In his Histoire Pluche restated his opposition to the cosmologies proposed by the physicists-whom he termed `romans philosophiques'-- and sought to display the excellence of the physics of Moses which supposedly conforms to the teachings of both `history and experimental physics. Il est abondamment illustré de 7 frontispices 24 planches pour le tome I insectes oiseaux de 37 planches pour le tome II plantes jardins 33 planches au tome III plantes bateaux poissons 26 planches au tome IV dont de nombreuses cartes 21 planches pour le tome V Mathématique machines ; 32 planches pour le tome VI métiers ; 33 planches pour le tome VII typographie métiers ; soit 206 planches la plupart dépliantes sur papier fort ou non. On notera que le nombre de planches diffère sensiblement d'un exemplaire à l'autre et même d'un tome à l'autre. Reliures en plein veau brun d'époque composées de trois ensembles : le premier du tome I à IV en veau moucheté le second en veau marbré du tome V à VII et le dernier en veau moucheté tome VIII et IX. Les fers utilisés sont également différents. Un accroc avec manque au dernier caisson du tome II. Un manque en queue du tome III iem pour le tome IV. Coiffe de queue du tome V élimée. Manques en tête des tomes VI et VII. Un manque en queue du tome VIII. Coiffe de tête du tome IX arrachée. Frottements. Des coins émoussés. Assez bon ensemble. Certains feuillets de planches ressortent. Seuls les tomes III V VI VII et IX possèdent un faux titre.
