Edition originale, de la première production éditée de Diderot, traduction de l'anglais qu'il donna sur commande pour Briasson, l'un des futurs éditeurs de l'Encyclopédie. Peu familier avec l'anglais, Diderot eut recours, pour cette tâche, à un dictionnaire anglais/latin. Le nom de Diderot apparaît, pour la première fois, dans l'approbation (III, p. 549): "Traduit de l'anglois par M. Diderot". Cette histoire de Grèce, qui s'étend des origines à la mort de Philippe de Macédoine, demeura un ouvrage de référence sur le sujet pendant une partie du XVIIIe siècle. A l'instar d'historiens plus réputés (Montesquieu ou Rousseau), Stanyan fait l'éloge de Sparte, État fort et stable et condamne la constitution démocratique de l'Athènes classique, soumise selon lui à l'action nocive des factions et des troubles politiques. (Adams HA1: "Cette première production de Diderot est de celles qui furent le moins souvent réimprimées" (p.174). Tchemerzine-Scheler, II, 915). Dos et mors légèrement frottés. Quelques épidermures. The encyclopaedia of arts and jobs by Diderot and D'alembert is an important work of reference to discover arts and jobs in XVIII century. The first volume of the first edition was published in 1751. The work continued to be published until it got the 17 volumes of articles written by the most important scholars of that time: Voltaire Rousseau D'Alembert Marmontel just to cite some of them. The planches began to sort out 11 years after the first edition of the Encyclopaedia from 1762 to 1772 until getting to 11 volumes. That's why it is very difficult to find a complete encyclopaedia of Diderot. unknown
